Red face Black exhaust pipes

My F-250 6.4 has 74K and the tailpipes are black? I see other trucks and the tailpipes are totally clean?

What's the deal?

Mine stayed clean as new for the first 18,000 miles then started sooting up. Dealer says it is normal. I believe the DPF is cracked.

Some dealerships/techs will replace them and others don't.

Mine typically regens every 300-400 miles. It will regen more frequently if a regen in process is ended because I don't drive it long enough for it to complete in the first place. When it went into regen yesterday at 375 miles from last regen; it was in regen for 12 minutes on the interstate at 70 MPH.

Mine makes oil (diesel fuel dilution from regen).

I'm not sure that a cracked DPF causes any real problem other than a black exhaust and I figure since I have to burn the extra fuel for the privledge of owning same that it ought to work properly.

So if you take it in; best of luck.

Bob

Thanks Bob. My mileage sucks at 14.5mpg ave. Performance is good but the black soot just doesn't seem right?

Should that be covered under the warranty?

Thanks again Bob.

Black soot is an emissions violation. If your state checks diesels then you have a problem.

Could be sensors, an over fueling issue. Hard to say.

Early on in the history, several had cracked DPF's. That will cause the issue as well. Only way to tell though is the open it up.

It is not normal for black pipes. I just turned 40K on mine and my pipes are a little gray is all.

Just did a 4200 mile trip, towing 14K and my pipes are still clean.
