Hey guys I am a bad owner!! My 89 Bronco needs front u-joints BAD!! But I also need ball joints, upper and lower. Problem is that I went back to college and am laid off. Cant afford the parts. Is it stupid to go through the hassle of disassembly just to do the u-joints? I have looked, but are there any threads on doing the procedure?? Step by step??? I know I have to borrow my friends ball joint press. Man I am in a bind!! Thanks guys.
Thinking outside the box for a minute, pehaps it would be best to park theh Bronco for a couple of months and ride one of your bikes for that time, especially as it is summer. What you would save on fuel costs would probably pay for your needed new ball joints as well.
Or, just not use the 4wd for a bit? I feel your pain, but you gotta do what you gotta do and IMO it is just not worth it to do only the u-joints when you need the ball joints as well.
ball joints would be more important then the front ujoints. the only time those are used are if your running in 4wd. the ball joints if worn can cause other things on that front end to wear out not to mention the driving hazard causing bad steering etc...
You dont have to remove the ball joints to replace the u-joints. Getting to the u-joints is pretty eazy. Ball joints can be quite a hassle, even with the press. I would do them both. One hint you probubly know. Untye the boot on the pax side axle at the slip joint and pull the outter half. You cant replace the inner joint like that. But I'm hopping for your sake that the inner joint isnt bad.
