I have a 82 Ford with a 460 in it. I've had carb problems since since I got it about 3 mos ago. I adjusted the floats using the side holes. It runs GREAT for about an hour then it floods out and I can barley keep it running. I've adjusted the floats and went through the carb but I always have this problem. The mechanical fuel pump went out when I first got it and the local place did not have one so I put a elec one in the line. The pump only delivers 6psi so I dont think thats it. My buddy said something about a return line but I dont see one. HELP!
6 psi will easily overcome the float and needle valve on a holley. It does need a return if you must use an electric but it would be a lot easier just putting a stock one back on it. They shouldn't be hard to get. That's still a pretty common engine. A good one too.
Are you still running the hot fuel system? Did you check the return orifice that it is feeding back to the tanks.....what did you adjust float level to? I would put an inline pressure gauge and check what it is actually getting instead of trusting what the pump box said. Good luck
Make sure you are running a good fuel filter. If there is trash in the tank, one little rust flake is all it takes to jamb the needle valve in the carb and make it flood. I would really suspect this problem if it runs fine sitting in the driveway, but start giving trouble when you start going down the road sloshing the fuel around in the tanks.
I run a Holley 4160 600 CFM with an external electric fuel pump I run a return on a 460. I don't start having trouble with fuel pressure until over 9 psi. I run an inline 3/8 inlet outlet fuel filter right at the carb.
