Pitman Arm Installation

I just bolted up the new Toyota P/S setup, and was wanting to install the pitman are, but it seems to be a b!@#h to install, any suggestions on how to get the pitman arm on the gear box? seems very tight and my impact just wont cut the mustard. Any suggestions would be helpfull, thanks.

the arm retention bolt is laying on the workbench, right?

these are usually splined, so only fit one way..

drive a chisel in the arm slot, just a little pressure off the box post..

is the box gear post painted? clean it off.

What are you usiing for a Pitman Arm? It should not go on hard if the splines are clean. Don't quote me but I thought I read someplace that there were two Spline patterns? Mine will slip on by hand about 3/4 of the way before I tighten it.

You CAN NOT use the Ford pitman arm. You must have one that fits the splines on the Toyota box. You can make one using the Toyota arm, some steel plate and a Ford ball. If you are not a good welder and fabricator, it would be best to buy a new arm from Mid Fiftys.

This be a Mid-Fifty Arm. Bad Photo but you can see how far it goes on by hand. It's a pretty crude piece for the money but 20 minutes on a bench grinder can make it presentable.

Thanks for the quick responses, I'm using the new pitman arm that came with the kit, there is no slot to pry apart. Absolutly no way this will go on by hand, this arm looked strange to me to begin with, the spline grooves that were cut into the pitman are, on the inside closest to the gear box are not defined at all, as you move towards the front of the arm (inside the circle), the spline grooves get more defined. You know, they gave me the wrong bolts, too big and long, so it's possible that the pitman arm is incorrect. I will check around to see what other arms are available and I will be calling the place I bought this from. Oh by the way, Sam your truck looks great!!! your CA buddy Dave.

Thanks for the pic, no way mine will go on like that, I got it on as far as I could and had to use a puller to get it back off. Something is a miss here.

From your description, it sounds like the splines are garbage. I'd call your kit vendor and throw a fit with them. Tell them you want a new arm that they have personally test-fit on a gearbox with shipping paid both ways. If they have any customer satisfaction policy at all, they'll oblige.
