Yes you will need a pitman arm removal tool. Has two fingers that reach around it and a threaded shaft in the middle. Maybe you could rent one from a parts place.

They can be a PITA to remove sometimes... might need a BFH and set of torches to heat it up as well....

Dont beat on the shaft too hard. You will ruin the bearings. If you want to take the piman arm off and dont care about saving it. You can deeply score the pitman arm in 2 spots(almost thru) and tap it w a small hammer. It will fall off, literaly

Good advice from everyone. When I took the arm off my `87 I was lucky, a big pry bar and a few good blows with a hammer on the side of the arm boss while hanging on the bar and it came off.
Refitting is a breeze, it just slides on by hand and tighten the nut.

What about post replacement alignment? Is that necessary with Pitman arm R & R?

NO not heat! all that does is get the shaft hot and ruin the seal. Do you have a puller? if so, when you have ALOT of tension on it, hit the end of the puller you put the socket onto. If that does not work do what i said earlier and deeply score the pitman arm on two sides (almost thru) then hit the cut spots w a chisel. the old pimpan arm will split in two and be off

Heres a tip. Get two (2-3lbs) hammers. Hold one against the the part. Hit the part with the other hammer directly opposite. When I have to bust a pipe union I do the same thing, except with pipe wrenchs. I use PB Blaster, Kroil, WD40, and ATF.
Sounds like the threads are stripped on your puller.
Regards and Happy Fathers Day

If the puller is popping off, its either the wrong size, or its not on straight.
When I had to do the seals on my ranger, I didn't think I'd be able to get it off either. I was using a puller, and tightened it up as much as I dared, still didn't come off. For some reason I ended up taking a break at that point (had to go to work, or sleep or something), when I went back to it the next day, the puller was loose and I was confused. Went to tighten it again, and the pitman had loosened up and came right off. So try tightening it up and waiting a while.
