I am going to go look at a 95 F250 today and I am curious if there is a 3rd place to look for the vin. It is cheap and the steering column is supposedly torn apart cause they didn't have a key. Want to be sure so I don't buy stolen merchandise.
"the firewall in the engine bay" is it accessible, maybe a little more info on exactly where would be awesome. If I check 3 spots I figure thats pretty thourogh
There is a hidden partial VIN(last numbers for production#) on the top frame rail under the AC/heat box. Its not a easy one to find. I found mine when I had the AC/heat box off the fire wall

There is a hidden vin number on the frame, the cops use it to ck the numbers,it is the full vin number and you will have to scarp and hunt unless you know a state insp to find it
also look at the vin on the dash if the vin looks old and the ribs arent new they ya may be good
On the front right corner of my bed, between the bed and the cab, there is a tag that looks suspiciously like the one in the engine bay by the hood hinge - I haven't investigated it much, but if someone knows about it do tell - is that a VIN tang too?

Yep thats another tag for the box. Some trucks have them and some don't depending on year.

Yep I have a few beds kicking around here.
There was one on the core support on my 89. I forget ware is was at when I scraped it.
Many years ago I was on a federal investigatory grand jury. One of the cases in our term (23 months, 27 days) was a major interstate automotive and construction equipment theft ring. A detective with the highway patrol (did not carry a gun, was not a sworn officer) was one of our witnesses. We refused to take his word about his data about VINs, unless he shared it. He shared that there were six places in "modern" vehicles where the VIN was recorded. Three are publicly known, three are not. Our trucks are "modern vehicles
Lance, technically they're all publicly known since someone has to operate the machine that stamps the VINs, and if that guy is the typical UAW member like those I had to deal with in one of GM's assembly lines he's probably shared his knowledge over a beer quite a a few times already. So the information is out there, it's just a matter of finding it... So far we have B-pillar, dash, firewall, front bed wall, core support, and the hidden one on the frame rail under the A/C box (if that's even readable on rust-belt trucks) - that's six, did I miss anything?
