First, I would like to say I am a new member, but I have been reading and using ya'lls suggestions from this forum for a few years.
I have a 1975 F150 that I am restoring. I recently rebuilt the 460 and automatic C6 and am having trouble figuring out what carb to use. The engine is just 30 over, stock intake, stock heads; I just used the heavier valve springs Comp gave with the smooth idle RV Cam. So, nothing crazy. I am trying to keep everything as stock as I can. However, the engine was designed with a spread bore intake and suited with a 4350 carburetor. Everyone I have talked to and have read says that it would not be a wise decision to use the 4350 carburetor due to the multiple problems with it.
With that being said, What would be the best carb to use w/o having to use an adapter and will connect easily to the kick-down lever on the transmission as well as using the stock air filter housing???????????
Hey Josh,
Thanx for the reply. I don't have any particular exp. w/ adapters per-say. Just heard mixed reviews... Trying not to spend a bunch of money learning! lol I know it's inevitable, but I am way over budget with this already and the wife is PO. So, wanna get it right the first time. I have a Holley 4160 that came with it. But before I rebuild, I wanted to know if that was the best application. Also, the kick down lever won't connect to it... Needs to be c. 2.5" longer or so. Regards, Josh H.
Does the 4160 have the ford kickdown attachment? If it does and its a good carb, 600 cfm in size or not much bigger but smaller is okay, get a kit and adapter for 50 to 60 bucks and run it. It will be the least expensive way to get a good carb on there.
Just some experience with a 4160. If your carb already has the lever and adjusting screw/spring on the throttle linkage then all you need is a holley extention bracket that costs less than 20 bucks. If it does not have the above on the linkage then you need a throttle shaft kit that will run you more and require a removal of the throttle plate to intstall the repacement shaft. If you do the shaft replacement follow the directions carefully and get the throttle blade screws staked securely or they may fall into your engine!
Thanx for all your help... I got a good deal on a reman. Holley 4160... I was able to use core For trade and am going with that. I found the extension plate from Lokar for alot less than a cable kickdown. Gonna bolt it all down tomarrow and see how it works. Can't drive to test now because the truck is stripped down and ready for my body guy to start getting it ready for paint! Can't wait... This is always been my dream truck
Your's might be a hybrid, but mine is RECYLCLED!!!
Okay, I bolted down the reman Holley 4160 w/ an adapter plate... ran okay, but after pulling the distributor and getting it on the right gear at t.d.c. I found I had a bad vacuum advance too. So, I have a new reman. distributor and new carb. and the engine is running okay... Just need to run the engine for a bit after paint, to allow the valves and cam to all come together...
