After market carb to replace Motorcraft 4350

Now that the brakes are working properly I am turning my attention back to seeing what I can do as far as replacing the Motorcraft 4350 carb with an aftermarket one. The truck is a 1978 F350 2 wheel drive dually with a stock 460 motor and automatic C6 tranny. This truck has a small dump bed and will be used mainly for pulling my Case 1845C skid loader around. The combined weight of the loader and trailer is approximately 8800 pounds. I am looking for a carb that will install easy using the present air cleaner. I have looked at Edelbrock, Holley, and Carter carbs in Summitt and Jegs but see no specific application for the 460. My present carb has the type of choke heated by the exhaust manifold tube. I would like to go to an electric choke if possible. I would appreciate carb names/model numbers that would work for the above application. The 4350 is in rough shape and would probably cost more to rebuild than a new carb.....Thanks.

Any aftermarket carb is going to require a little rigging to get it in. You would be surprised how an old carb will clean up if you get it rebuilt, and you will know everything will fit.

Edelbrock Performer and Carter AFB's are the same carb both manufactured by Weber USA. I would think any square bore 4v by Holley, the Holley knock offs like Demon ect,and Edelbrock/Carter would work fine. Personally I have a Edelbrock 600 w/ electric choke (1406 I think) I've used on a 302 and then a 390. That carb was easy to deal with. A buddy bought a Carter AFB 625cfm that he replaced a Q jet on his Chev that made a really big improvement. I would consult w/ a carb specialist as to ideal sizing for the 460, I would think a 750 cfm or maybe 850cfm size might be better depending on your goals. As far as the choke, the Edelbrock I have simply needs a source of switched 12v power (like the I post on solenoid) You might have to buy some add on pieces to connect your kick down and throttle linkage or cable. The Holley types some ppl love and some hate. They certainly have lots of jets availible and the components to rebuild them and modify them and whatnot. The Edelbrock/Carter type are maybe less fussy to work on. You can adjust there mixture very easily without haveing to change out jets, by changeing metering rods and springs via a little trap door on the top that is fastened by one screw (times two-both sides of carb) and in doing so you don't have to drain fuel bowl like on Holley. If changing the metering rods isn't enough, then you can change jets. If you could find a carburator specialty place that could really dial you in with their sniffer machines, I'll bet you'll be pleased with any of these replacements over the tired one you have. As far as using the stock air cleaner, I know on my Edelbrock I need to get a little round spacer so that the cleaner will clear the fuel inlet near the top of the carb. Personally at the moment I have a 2v 390 and have been using the motorcraft 2v which seems to work well except that I've found that getting jets for a motorcraft isn't too easy anymore, their scarce where I live.

After market carb to replace Motorcraft 4350

Thanks for responding. I am keeping the Motorcraft 4350 and eventually will have it rebuilt. I am using this as an excuse to get a new carb for another 1 ton with a 460 that has no carb (some wives just don't understand). Can anyone tell me the difference between a spread bore and a square bore. Both motors have the same stock intake and I have no idea which one it is. I am leaning towards an Edelbrock Performer 1411, but the info I seen about it leads me to believe it is for a square bore application.....Thanks

Squarebore=intake manifold where carb bolts on has 4 equal size holes for the carb butterflies.

Spreadbore=intake manifold where carb bolts on has 2 small holes in front and two larger holes in the rear for the carb butterflies.

I might be wrong, but I recall that there are two Motorcraft carbs used on the 70s 460, the 4300 and 4350. I remember from my beater Lincoln experiences that a square Holley bolts in place of the former, and that nothing bolts on in place of the latter. But, I might be wrong about that too.

After market carb to replace Motorcraft 4350

I just went through this exercise and found that getting a rebuilt 4350 was much cheaper than buying a new carb. I spent $140 for a rebuilt that was shipped prior to my return. The new carb. works great with the exception of the Manifold choke. I plan on converting to electric in the near future. My source was: Carb. Exchange 1-800-491-2633, carbs@sprynet.com.

Good Luck.

Way to search way back leroybrown. Cool old discussion.
is the 4350 a spread bore? Is it a Holley-like carb, or something obviously Ford? Just wondering since Summit now has a really nice carb that looks to me like it's based off of the old Ford 4bbl carbs (4100?) that fit a square-bore intake.
Engine Masters did a "Cheap Carb Shootout" awhile back and a refurbished version of the Summit carb won over some other very recognizable names.
If it's compatible, it would be worth adding to the list of potential replacements.

Sorry I'm not more versed in the 4350's but I'll get there eventually.

When I bought a 77 F350 it was running and driving and used it as a spare vehicle for a while but the game plan was to use it for parts. The 460 ran great and I put that into my 77 F150 4x4. When I got it it had a Carter AFB. When I swapped the engine swap during body paint etc…I rebuilt the carb being as the engine was out. I didn’t need no adapter etc…to the original cast iron intake. So a Carter AFB or a Edelbrock version shouldn’t have any issues bolting on to a factory intake.

Here is the 4350 on my '76 460.

I rebuilt it, changed to a manual choke & throttle, eliminated the EGR, and blocked the heat riser. So far, it's working well.
