I swapped out the PCM for my spare, and it made no difference.
I limped the truck (in second gear) over to the trans shop 7 miles away.
The trans was running HOT!, (220deg in about 2 miles) I had to pull over to let it cool about half way there. I never broke 30mph...
Something has to be really wrong with those temps.

Trans shop finally called and said she's all fixed...said it was a failed soleniod pack. A rebuilt one was installed durring the rebuild at my request to save a few bucks. I guess it also was bad...
He's driving it home tonight to see if the temps are in check.
Hopefully....hopefully I will have it back in the morning...
Yeah my fear too, why did ford put a 400tq engine together with a 200tq capacity transmission?
Bob,
I don't believe that's the case, at all.
The problems begin when they are driven like they're stolen, or had a lot of additional horsepower added in front of them, or are called on to operate outside of their temperature limits.
Yes, they can be made even stronger, and run cooler, but these transmissions are adequate to do the job MOST of us call on them to do.
Well I guess I spoke too soon.... I went to pick up the truck this morning and they said it was fixed, and they were just about to take it for a test drive.
I went with him and it still wont come out of first on its own...
If it is shifted manually it goes in each gear and the tc locks when it should. shifts seem to be nice and crisp.
Hes swapping out my PCM last I heared ( which I already did and it did nothing???)
He's getting very frustated and so am I!!!
I sure hope all of this is on his dime and not mine. It never had a problem shifting before the rebuild.
I just need to vent....two weeks without my truck is getting on my last nerve. He has a wall full of transmission certifications...why cant he figure out what wrong with mine?????
Wow. Nothin worse than worryin about your trany goin out and then when it does you dread the cost to rebuild, and now on top of that you take it to a "pro" and they mess it all up! I dont blame you at all for bein on your last nerve.
I did some googing, and came up with "Intermediate sprag"... I dont know...
That would be my guess.
If it is the sprag it won't shift 1-2 with the shifter in D, but it will shift 1-2 when you move the shifter from 1 to 2. When you shift it manually there is a band that applies and replaces the intermediate sprag.
If it's broken or installed incorrectly, that will cause a 1-3 upshift at about 18-22 MPH........
On EDIT: Oh, and only when you let off of the accelerator pedal since the vehicle speed isn't high enough under acceleration to command a 3rd gear upshift before the engine redlines.
