Hello folks...newbie here. Quick intro before asking a question. I'm more a vintage motorcycle enthusiast (I own four Harley's and belong to several motorcycle forums), but I also like pretty well all vintage machinery.
I have recently purchased a 95 Aerostar for my daily driver and I am trying to solve a few issues with it. The most perplexing at the moment is it's pinging under load. Since this is distributorless I have ruled out timing. Anybody have any suggestions to offer. I was told EGR but I'll be darned if I can find where it resides. I'm sure this may have popped up by someone else and I will start searching previous posts.
Just did a search and found out not all have EGR's. That's nice to know, cause I spent about a half hour searching for it. Read some stuff on pinging and will attempt to try a few checks. I'm still open to suggestions if you have any.
Try using a can of seafoam in the gas tank and run a can in an vacuum line while holding the throttle open a little..Sounds like carbon deposits and the like..My 94 didn't have an egr either...If you do its drivers side behind ac on the 4.0l
Khan...I used NGK plugs but I can't remember which ones. I'll pull one out and do a cross reference to double check. I'll try some other diagnosis next week when I'm off and see what I can find. Thanks
NGKs are not the proper plugs. Use Autolite double platinum or Motorcraft double platinum. A cross reference does not tell you anything. The Autolite plugs were engineered for the Ford motors, the NGKs were not. The NGKs might get the gap right, and might be close on the heat range, but the displacement and exposure is different. And heat range is a tricky thing to define, because it can vary with compression.
