hi my front seal is leaking real bad, what would be the process to change it? some people have said i can just pry it out with a screw driver and some have told me that i have to take the harmonic balancer and timing cover off. i really dont want to take the timing cover and all off. could i possibly just take the harmonic balancer off and use a screw driver or something to remove the old seal? the truck is a 85 f150 with a 79 460 engine.
You will definitely have to get a puller and pull the harmonic balancer off. Don't try to pry on it, the outer ring is just held on there with rubber.
You might be able to pry the seal out after that. Also check the shiny surface on the balancer where the seal runs. Most likely the seal has worn a groove in the balancer. They make a sleeve at the store that fits over this area and repairs the groove. If you don't use the repair sleeve, the new seal will probably leak also.
A slide hammer with a very small hook tool on the end would work excellent. It's going to be some sort of hook tool whatever you get. You don't have much room between the seal and the crankshaft after the damper comes off.
