Since ive bought my truck its had an oil leak. There are a few compodents that were/are causing it also.
Since than i have changed the valve cover gaskets, and also the oil pan gaskets. Those we could tell had slight seeping
But now after those changes, (which are not leaking right now, ive checked them varouis times) it still has a leak. Which i think ive found, but i dont know what it is or what to do to fix it!
The area of the leak is right behind the oil pan, and before the transmission pan.
So any help on this would be great, also if you think there might be any other causes or places that would be helpful!! Heres a picture of the area i think its at. THANKS!!! The oil pan in on the bottom of picture....
Its not power steering fluid (red colored), cause the fluid is a brownish black. An im pretty sure its not being blowing back there cause its dripping in that one spot.
Rear main seal? What would be the reasoning for this to leak? Thanks
I ran into the same thing. My truck started out slight, and seems to be growing faster that I feel safe with. I pressure washed the under carriage today and it got worse.
replaced it on my tranny out at a buddie's shop... if you're used to pulling transmissions its easy lol... pull transmission, clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, the whole kit and kabodle then simply yank the old one out and put the new one it.. if i rember right Ches had a special way he put it in... might want to ask someone else exactly how to do that part... good luck though and keep us posted
If the leak is real light, you might be able to get away with using some sort of additive in your oil that is intended to swell it up and reduce/stop the leak.
What engine do you have? Some of the newer SBF motors have a 1 piece rear main seal that requires you to pull the transmission. The older ones have a 2 piece seal that you may be able to replace just by pulling the oil pan and rear main bearing cap.
My engine is a 5.0 302. Pulling the transmission or taking out the oil pan and what not out isnt sounding good right now.
So today i went to advance auto and checked out a few additives to put into the oil. I will see how that does for now and hopefully it will stop it since its just a slight leak...
Okay so its about a year since i started this thread and it seems my oil leak has now increased quite a bit from rear main seal.
I'm pretty darn positive its the rear main seal, power washed all grease off top of transmission and off all the bottom of engine/tranny and around the pans and starter. Now i've been watching it closely and the only area its showing wet is where the rear engine cover/plate is/also seems its coming its coming from inside of it.
In about 2-3 days ive lost around 3/4 of a quart of oil so i'm really wanting to get this fixed.
Now, from what i have heard you can either remove the transmission to replace it or you can lift the engine and remove the oil pan/and oil pump. So which do yall feel is easier. As i always ask, is there going to be anything tricky or anything you feel i should know before i get into this mess? Thanks alot folks
I have a small leak coming from the exact same place and suspected it to be a rear main seal issue. According to the shop service manual for 1980 the rear main for the 5.0 / C6 is replaced by pulling the transmission back, pulling the old seal out, then pressing a new one in. There is a special tool suggested to make sure the seal is 1) seated to the correct depth and 2) completely square to the crank.
I also called a few mechanics in the area for pricing, they were all about $500-$600. Its only a $23 part, but a time consuming job.
To my knowledge, doing this on this engine requires dropping the oil pan and the rear main
bearing cap from the crankshaft, I suspect removing the tranny would let you at an output
shaft seal but that's all. I imagine the hard part is going to be removing the oil pan, I'll bet
you'll have to jack up the engine & tranny assembly in order to move that thing out of the
way enough to be able to work ('course, I'me envisioning my one-ton 4x4, your truck may
be different).
Yep, 500-600 bucks is very good money i dont want to drop on a 23 dollar part. If it takes me 6-7 hours so be it. Flare, you mentioned a tool to help seal it in correctly? Can you point me in the direction of this tool?
Okay so the game plan would be, undo motor mount bolts, (do i need to undo transmission mounts?), find some way to jack up the motor, remove the oil pan completely, remove bearing cap, than i should be able to get to it? Replace, put back in same order as taken off.
