Keyless entry transmitter

Does anyone know if universal keyless entry transmitters are available? I have a 99 Expy and also a 97 Silverado (and another GM car) and I'd like to use one clicker to open all (one set of keys vs. several). I've tried entering the learn mode of the Expy, and it appears that it learns the GM transmitter, but it won't respond after I exit the learn mode. I've also done the same with the GM with similar results. Do GM's and Fords operate on different bandwidths that make this impossible? Are there remotes out there that can be used for both?

Thanks for any help that anyone can offer-clearly I don't know much about how these work other than they use radio frequency.
