E40D problems --- I think
Truck has been running great for some time. (knocking wood all the while).
About 4 weeks ago, after running about 200 miles, I noticed hard shifts and the O/D light on the stalk was blinking. I was close to home, parked it and next day no problem.
No problems since.
Sunday I replaced the rear shocks (old ones could be original -- one of them puked oil all over the drive). I took it out, drove it, all was well.
Drove it again today (Wed) for the first time since.
1 - ABS light is on. WTF?
2 - O/D override flashing, hard shifts.
3 - About a 3 mile drive. On the second "pull over, shut off and restart", it would not shift out of first gear when in "D". If I moved it to second, I had 1st and 2nd gear, but not 3. Shifting back to "D", just have 1st gear. Arggggh. Another "pull over, shut off and restart". Same exact symptoms, but now the O/D override light is not flashing.
Help?
I did notice that on the drivers side, on the rear frame rail, there is a wire loom. There is a wire that is hanging out of the loom, it is green, and looked to be in bad shape, but was still connected. I know I need to get into it and replace the bad part of the wire, but have no idea if that's part of the problem or not.
Thanks!
Tach is fine. When I got the truck, the tach was wacky and I replaced the sensor, which made it shift like a dream (three years ago). I didn't really know that it was shifting weirdly until I replaced it. But that was nothing like this ---this is weird.
I'll look @ the fuses and replace that wire next.
thanks.

I have an OBD1 scan tool, just haven't really gotten anything meaningful out of it ever.
But you can bet I'm going to try to pull codes tonight.
Thanks for the help. As always: good, timely info on this site.
So, god willing, tonight I will:
0 Pull codes and record
1 Check all the fuses
2 Check that sensor
3 Repair the green wire that is sticking out of the loom
4 Test it
5 Pull codes again.
If I have something out-of-sequence, let me know!
Thanks,
if you damaged a wire going to the VSS this makes your trans act very bad.
when i had my bed just bolted on,before i had it fixed/welded up, the hoist came down and pinched those wires and i had to drive home slow and easy due to the trans in a semi limp mode.
Anyway, it's all good now.
I tried scanning for codes over and over -- no codes. Started to worry.
I checked all the fuses, OK. Well, there was one under the hood for a trailer signal and stop lights that was blown. I replaced it, re-scanned multiple times, no joy.
Pulled it into the garage, got under there, and sure enough, the wire was sheared right off of that speed / abs sensor. HTF did that happen? DIdn't look like it was all of a sudden kind of cut. Looked dirty and the wires were corroded, etc.
I cut the wires back, stripped them, soldered the connector back on,heat shrinked the connections and put the loom back in the holders. Added a couple of zip-ties just to be sure.
Turned it on, no ABS light. Yay! I think I forgot to mention that.
I scanned, still no joy. Then I noticed there was another plug in the EEC housing. I pulled that sumbich out, and plugged it into the scan tool and PRESTO. (yes, I can be a dumba$$)
I got 11 1 11 on the Key On Engine Off, then on the Key On Engine Running, I got the 5 indicating 7.3 diesel, and then 74. When I read what 74 was, I re-ran it, after the 5 pulse engine ID, I hit the breaks and then I got 11.
So KOEO is 11 - 1 - 11 and KOER is 11. Looks like I'm in good shape.
It shifts so smooothly now. I think the wire must have been sending a half-*** signal for a while. It hasn't shifted like this since I don't know when.
Next project is to fix that green wire out of the loom that I didn't touch tonight.
You guys all rock and always solve my little problems!
This place is the best
you may think of this as a little problem, but it would have caused a trans failure in the not so distant future i bet.
you just can't beat FTE man
some people don't like the E40D due to its "complicated electrical troubleshooting problems". but research has shown, this trans is worth its weight in gold.(huge thanks to david85[trust me when i tell you,as humble as he is,the average person has no clue how much we owe him] & Mark-the engineer.)
all you need is common sense on what to do when problems arise, and FTE to help you fix them, and this trans is as good as $ in the bank.
