Hello, I just finished rebuild on 302 motor I used the damper and flexplate that came out of a 1986 5.0 and were from the same motor,( matched set I presumed) how can I tell if that might be my problem ?? It seems to vibrate when I rev up to about 1000 rpm's if I go higher it isn't as noticeable but still seems to be there Thanks, Michael P.S. aod automatic
I didn't check any numbers on block but it came out of 1978 f100 but as I said I had donor car which had 1986 5.0 roller motor but I just used 164 tooth flex plate and 50oz damper off of that motor,Michael
Now that I am thinking about it the 78 motor had a 50oz damper like the 86 motor so I thoght all I had to do is match the flex plate with the damper but the actuaul balance of the 78 302 is different from the 86 5.0 I see were the flexplate that matchs the 28 oz damper has less teeth will that affect the starter I am useing off the 86 5.0??? Michael
Yeah there are 164 and 157 tooth flexplates, if using the smaller one you need to use a different spacer plate as well.. the hole for the starter is positioned slightly different to allow the starter to mesh properly. Bottom line is the balancer and flexplate have to match balance weights and your '78 motor needs 28oz versions.
The motor I bought had 50 oz balancer with eaton power steering pump research showed those pumps were discountinued 78/79/ (figued it was 1978) so I bought crank for 1978( thats were problem was) 28oz balancer has 3 holes 50oz has 4 holes so I bought after market 28oz with 4 holes so I can still use all my pully's and belts Thanks for your help ,Michael
