how does the a/c - vaccumm pump work?

i have some un hooked because i installed warn hubs, i havent had ac in the truck for over a year and its about time to fix it, getting hottttt!

the pump runs when i un-hook the black tube going into the cab, when i hook it back up it shuts off. i have defrosters, how does the thingy switch positions to allow the air to go out of the vents in the dash?

im clueless.

plug the lines that went to the hub's ..any vac leak will make the fan default to defrost...

The climate control switch has channels, or grooves, on a disc that when turned direct the vacuum to the appropriate lines and vacuum actuator through the harness behind the switch. Could the line be pinched or restricted somewhere?

I thought you said the pump runs in your first post? It can only be one or the other. Either it runs or does not. If it runs sometimes then find out why it does not other times. Then fix that. It is not that complicated of a system and the guys have steered you in the right direction. Of course if your AC compressor is shot or inoperative then you have bigger problems.

Summary: vacuum pump. Works or does not. Check fuses and wiring. If it works but not correctly then check for leaks or faulty control assembly. Definitely fix that before your trip.

Kenny,

The vac pump does not run continuosly unless there is a leak.

Without a leak it will run until the proper vac level is reached in the reservoir and then turn off. There is a vacuum operated switch on the vac pump that goes open and the pump stops. When the vac level in res drops the switch closes and the pump will run.

it doesnt run constant so i know there isnt a leak....

when it is plugged into the hose that leads into the cab the pump shuts off IMMEDIATLY, when i unplug that the pump runs as if there was a leak.

so if the pump is shutting off when pluged in, either the line has to be pinched shut or clogged somewhere, or the thing that directs where the air is going is broken.

but since it shuts off immediatly when plugged in kinda leads me to beleive the line is pinched shut? correct?

The reservoir sounds like it is holding vacuum. Just make sure the vac line to the hubs is blocked.
