I can just about guarantee if you did not replace that nut and simply retightened the original nut that it will come loose again.

What y'all call a u-joint aka wobble joint, Ford calls a spring. It looks no more like a spring than a bull elephant does.

Nevertheless, since it looks exactly like the part in the pic you posted, this is what it is: DOAZ3B664A .. Steering Column Locking Lever Spring-Use w/Tilt Wheel.

Uh, incorrect there Bill. If you still worked at the parts counter and ordered that part number for me you would have to return it. The steering column locking lever spring as you call it is to the left of the U-joint/wobble joint, clearly visible in the above picture. He was asking specifically for the U-joint/wobble joint.

Since I don't have a catalogue to look these parts up (someone mentioned quite a while ago about sending me one but never kept his word even after I sent him my address, remember that Bill? Still have the PM's if I need to refresh your memory) I'm going to guess that the U-joint/wobble joint is only available with the steering shaft.

2WD's have a one piece steering shaft (3524) / 4WD's have a two piece steering shaft. The upper steering shaft (3524) connects to the lower steering shaft and coupler assy (3B676).

Please explain how a 2wd tilt column will have a one piece steering shaft and still be able to tilt. I have a 2wd tilt column in the basement. If you'd like I could pull it apart to show that it is a 2 piece shaft with a U-joint/wobble joint.

1966/75 4WD's: The U-Joint that is part of the lower steering shaft and coupler assy is replaceable / 1976/79 4WD's: The lower steering shaft and coupler does not have a replaceable U-Joint...it was manufactured as a one piece assy.

Why the year difference? This thread was specifically about a 78-79 tilt column, not a pre 75 column.

Like I said, Ford calls it a spring...but it no more looks like a spring than a bull elephant does.

The part Ford calls a spring is the SAME part you posted a pic of.

I'm not blind, I looked in the catalog then matched the part up. Don't blame me because Ford calls the part a confusing and stupid name.

The coil spring (steering column position lock spring) you're speaking of is C7SZ3B768A

It's not DOAZ3B664A which Ford calls a spring, but you call a wobble joint.

ALL 1966/79 4WD steering columns have a TWO PIECE steering shaft. All I was doing was pointing out the differences in the lower steering shaft and couplers.

The 1966/75 lower steering shaft and coupler is composed of 21 separate parts including a replaceable U-Joint.

The 1976/79 lower steering shaft and coupler (there are 3 different types) is a one piece assembly.

And, btw...while you assume the 2WD steering shaft is composed of two pieces, in reality, it ain't.

I'll keep that in mind, Ranger. I'm just glad I finally got around to looking into it. THANKS for the info.

NumberDummy, THANKS for the part number & phone number info.

If you ever get a patent on that solid shaft tilt column, let me know.
I might invent one piece rod bearings or maybe center bolt main caps.... Come on Bill, surely I got at least a grin out of ya.
