E4OD 3-D,D-3 shift

Orig owner 95 F150 2wd SC XLT in VG condition, 85K miles and it has lots of use still in it. 5.8L CA SFI V8 w/ OEM roller cam, Cloye’s Gear set, perf Ign, No codes or MIL. Runs strong.

E4OD (1996) w/ TransGo shift kit, 4wd 4R100 pan, gskt and filter. Shifts with a soft bump but not neck breaking. Problem: Normal driving is fine, LO clutch timing when towing up or down hills needs help. The TransGo kit tightened 1-2, 2-3 shifts. D is when the TC clutch is engaged. Tow mode (no grades): shifts 2-3 @ 26mph and stays in 3<sup>rd</sup> until 38 mph. At light throttle will shift from 3 to D or D to 3 @ 38 mph. But,on a grade in D trans will stay in D, lugging engine RPM and vehicle speed down to 20 MPH, then shifts to 2 and, upshifts immediately to 3. Unable to force downshift.<o

When Towing and going up a grade, I want to stay in 3 longer, 42-45 mph. I want the TC clutch to unlock under high engine load to increase torque multiplication. When descending a hill I want the TC to unlock and downshift into 3<sup> </sup>just like it was at No Load. The transmission shop where my work was done tells me that the 3-D (Tow) shift is ECU related. Is this correct? Why is the downshift affected more when towing? Suggestions?<o

Every shift and the torque converter clutch lock is controlled by the PCM. If you want to alter when any of that happens you need custom software to make that a reality. There is nothing inside the transmission that schedules when shifts and locks happen.

D-3 Downshift

I was not sure if the Transco shift kit altered my downshift. Why is the downshift from D -3 affected more when towing? I have no issues with it normal driving or towing on level surfaces. The downshift problem only occurs on grades. It will be a lot easier on my transmission and safer when I am towing if I could use 3rd gear. If you want to use 3rd gear turn off the OD with the button on the end of the shifter.

OD switch on shift lever

OD on or off is not the problem. Original problem is the torque converter lock-up clutch is engaging too soon (into D) and not allowing 3rd gear to do it's job. I really do need the torque converter to be unlocked when climbing hills under tow / high engine loads. That is the only way the it will multiply torque. It just goes into D way too soon for towing conditions.
I have determined from conv. with Transgo, Hypertech & Jet engineers that they know of NO one with an aftermarket OBD1 programmer chip that will alter transmission shift timing. They suggested doing a data stream input to the PCM. That's next. Any help to steer me in the right direction would be appreciated.

I've gone through 2 rebuilt transfer Cases on this thing and its a pain to find non destroyed refurbished unit

We had one a few years ago that the converter would lock up in 2nd gear and it was the coolant temp sensor.

It may have more than one sensor, one would report to your guage or idiot light and the other to the PCM. If the one to the PCM shows that the engine is too hot then the PCM might lock up the TC to help reduce heat generation.
