Hey guys. Im gettin ready to build my 1993 F150 a motor. Its 4x4 going to have a zf s5-42 5 speed behind it. Im wanting to have my power right from idle. This is going to be a carb'd motor.
$3k. But the maching won't cost me anything and I will be assembling the motor. I remember talking with you before Paul, but I cant remember what you said
If I was you and loved my truck like you seem to love yours I would build a special engine with all the best parts I could..i.e.forged pistons, roller cam/rockers,aluminum heads,MSD ignition, headers,do it up!
Whats your setup 393? Im would really like to get as close to 400 horse/tourque as psooible, but i dont want to be turning 5k rpm to do it if you catch my drift
I started with a `90 5.8 from a F-250 that I bought from a salvage yard. I took it all apart and went over the block with a die grinder to clean the casting flash.Had the block magged, bored .030 over, the crank centerline checked out good. Bought a rotating kit from Summit with cast Eagle crank and Eagle rods.Trick Flow pistons that are made by Probe. Got the TF heads with 2.02`s and ported and polished them. Called Comp Cams and told them what I was building and they made me a custom XFI roller with slightley more lift,I think it`s about .585/.590 w/290/300.I tweeked the Edelbrock 5.8 F.I. intake a little, put a BBK throttle body on it.Long tubes w/fabbed egr tube and dual air injection smog tubes.BBK fuel pumps,30lb injectors,MSD dist.,Digital 6 box,big blue coil.I put the Ford MAF swap kit in it,I changed the wire overlay to the injectors to fire on the 5.8`s timing even though Ford said I didn`t need to.HV oil pump needed clearanced along with the windage tray and rod bolts.I put a 9qt. oil pan on it too.
The important thing is to build the short block strong and all the other things can be changed later on. A 4" stroke will get you more low end grunt,a 3.85" I would consider a happy medium.
also why go carbed? since your going with a zf an upgrade to mass air would be simple. find a complete efi mass air harness from 94+ for a 302 running a manual tranny and get the computer also. then just get a dyno tune once motor is in and running.
Cost. Intial, its cheaper to build. Down the road, if something goes wrong, its cheaper to replace jets than it is injectors, i would have to trailer the truck over two hours to get to a reputable person to dyno tune it. And its not cheap for that the tune either. I have a buddy who just built a 347 stroker thats mass air in a mustang. He just went through the dyno tuning and everything, not cheap at all.
Simplicity. Something goes wrong, a few screws for adjustments, maybe replace a jet instead of having to find a computer capable of scanning/programming it.
