Unhappy 5.4 swap

I have a 5.4 in my 99 SD and would like to put a 03 5.4 out of a f150 in it... I have been told that the way my intake (99) would go on the 03 would not work even no that both motors are 2V heads? Also I have been told that my motor is a non EGR and the 03 is a EGR motor? Another person told me that there is a extra bolt hole on the block of the SD than the f150 motor? Why so many motor combos ford told me 9 different ways this motor is set up?

Thanks for your time!

Modular engines are built at two different plants, Romeo Engine Plant and Windsor Engine Plant at the start. The plants had different designs for main bearings, heads (cam caps: individual caps per cam journal vs. interconnected cam "cages"), camshaft gears (press-on vs. bolt-on), valve covers (11 bolts vs. 13 bolts), crankshaft (6 bolts vs. 8 bolts), and cross bolt fasteners for main bearing caps.

But, the 5.4L 2V was built only at the Windsor Engine Plant, while the 5.4L 3V moved production to the Essex Engine Plant beginning in 2003 but kept the Windsor design. The SVT 5.4L 4-valve engines are built at Romeo Engine Plant, hand assembled on the niche line.

So, perhaps your source is confused by Romeo vs. Windsor engines, which primarily affect the 4.6L V-8.

So can I put a 03 5.4 2V motor out of a f150 into my 99 SD?

Thanks

Replied to your other thread first but i'll add to this too. If you currently have a non-PI engine, your intake will not work properly with the 03. It can physically be done, but don't. A Ford dealer replaced one head on my truck (99, non-PI) long before I bought it, with a PI head and copious amounts of RTV to get it to seal. The intake ports in the heads are not the same shape as the ports on the old intake. I have pics of each in my gallery. You may need to use your old oil pan if the donor engine is from an f150. I covered the other issues I had in your other thread.

I had a look at your pics on the heads... If I have to use my intake and not the 03 what about porting it to match the new heads? why do you have to change the front timing covers?

Thanks.

I'm just gonna reply to both threads here. I think that the 5.4 intake manifolds from all trucks of the same year are the same, don't know about the throttle bodies. I've heard that some 99's came with the PI engine, just to be sure, is your intake manifold all plastic or aluminum upper and plastic lower?
I don't know exactly what you'll have to do to remove the EGR from that engine\or what else you may need to get it to work on your truck.
Not sure that the f150 harness will work with the SD.
An iron 5.4 block is an iron 5.4 block, the oil pan will bolt right up (SD's is deeper if I remember correctly) Never heard of any extra holes on the block.
I had both 99 exhaust manifolds on the mismatched engine, so your old ones should work IF you delete the EGR. Check part numbers, maybe the ones from the f150 will work if you do use the EGR.
I had to change timing covers to be able to use all my old accessories, the serp. belt on mine is wider than the one the donor truck (04 Excursion) and my pullies didn't have enough clearance with the new cover.
If you have access to the complete 03 engine use as much as you can from it. And if you want pics of anything specific just ask, I took quite a few.
Oh yeah, welcome to FTE!

Thanks so much!!!!

i think you have made up my mind on buying the the 03. I am a steal fabricator and have a machine shop at work to deal with the manifold or any costum parts that I might have to make. If the throttle body does not work I might be able to make a adaption plate on our flow jet.

My intake is aluminum. Is the 03 plastic?

Thanks again!!

Yes the 03 is all plastic except for a crossover at the front for coolant. I would go with the newer intake rather than port the old one.

Label everything, take lots of reference pics along the way, don't get rid of anything until the job is finished, change the exhaust manifold studs and spark plugs on the new engine before putting it in. Pick up a shop manual\haynes. It's really not a bad job to do, the key is figuring out which parts of yours you need to re-use beforehand.

Yes I was going to change the plugs... are the heads in 03 still only have 3 treads holding the plugs in? I am going to change my exhaust... wich cat back system do you suggest? also where I live we do not have any envroment laws on cats. so do you think I can just put a strait pipe in? will this mess up the computer?

Just want to say thanks again, you have been so much help :-)

I think they added more threads, I didn't change mine (regret) so I don't know for sure. No idea about a cat back system, and no comment on running without cats. good luck.
