The sending unit wire will just come off. You may have to bend a little tab out of the way to remove it, but mine came off real easy. You need to go to an autozone or somewhere similar and get a fuel line removal tool to get the quick connect fittings off. They won't come off with just your hands.
edit: here is a link to the kind of tool I'm talking about. You will need one of the 3/8 variety for at the tank. If you are removing the line going to the pump you will also need one of the 5/16 variety. Or you can get the one that has both (part number 6509):
Took the cannister apart. The fuel pick-up cone goes directly into a compartment at the bottom of the cannister where the return line is also routed and mix with the tank fuel. From there, both the return fuel AND tank fuel are routed to the upper cannister where the mixed fuel finally go up the pick-up tube.
