Well I have a 2000, with 4.0, 4wd, off road package. Now to the problem, with the transmission out of overdrive, in 4th gear, and you let off the gas, at approx 1500 rpms it just slows down like really quick. It will drop down to like 800 very fast. It's just like a jake brake on a truck. I read a posting over in ranger station that a guy had the same problem. The replies were about a decel fuel shutoff that all fords with efi have it. It really does bother you when you are slowing down.
not like that. I think its only supposed do its job if you hit something. Then you would have to manualy reset it for the engine to get fuel.
daveeich337, You're thinking of the emergency fuel pump shut off. DFCO (Deceleration Fuel Cut Off) operates pretty much as the OP describes, except it usually will stop somewhere in the range if 1500 rpm (at least, it does on my truck).
Charlie268, When you take the truck out of overdrive, the torque converter locks, and thus it acts somewhat like a stick shift when you let off the gas. That is, the vehicle will have engine braking and DFCO will become active more easily. This is completely normal and it's the way it's supposed to function. But I've never seen it continue until down to 800 rpm. I would expect that to produce stalling problems. If you want coasting, leave the overdrive engaged.
