I'm swaping a 460 into my 78 F250 4x4 and am looking for a set of shorty headers with out spending $500. I was wondering if anyone had used the Sanderson FF461 or FF462 on their truck for this swap. $500 is high for my budget but I definitly do not want manifolds.
How well do they fit the right side of the motor in the engine bay.
Personally, I don't know. Go to the Sanderson website and they have dimensioned drawings. Second, they're tight tuck headers for hot rods so my assumption is that they'll clear and allow fabrication of the rest of the exhaust system to fit.
those hot rod headers usually don't perform much better on a dyno than the stock cast ones, so I'm not sure I'd bother with dropping a few hundred on them when you could save a little more and get L&L's.
They look very similar to the L&L shorty's except the right side doesn't turn down past the starter. Do you think there would a noticeable loss in performance or no gain over manifolds?
i don't know, I pulled up pics of both and the L&L's look like they use bigger diameter tubes, equal lengths, and they just look better, plus they have a lifetime guarantee against corrosion. a bare steel header like the sanderson will probably last 3-4 years before it starts to rust.
Your probably right, i'm working on tight buget and trying to get my truck on the road. I don't want to buy junk or something I wont like but I don't want to break the bank.
I've been saving up for L&L's but just on a whim I started googling and there are TONS and TONS of people that have bought their heads in the past 5 years that have had fitment issues and bad customer service when they called for help. Seems like before maybe 2008 or 2009 everyone loved them and somewhere around in there things took a turn for the worst. I don't want to mess with cramming everything under the frame, so I was thinking about a pair of the "mad dog" fender well exits: 460 "Mad Dog" Fenderwell Exit
But apparently they take away from your turn radius if you have big tires (I do).
shame more companies don't make 460 4wd headers for these trucks, it seems like its the most popular swap.
I was looking at the L&L's from bronco graveyard, about a $100 less.Dont' know about service. I wanted the shorties to avoid the sharp bends you from long tube headers and trying to come out of the collecter and then up over your trany cross member. My plan was also to put a Y pipe right there next to the trany and run a single 3" out infront of the right rear. Seems to be about the easiest way and better performance with the exhaust tied together instead of separate.
well, long tubes always make more power than shorties, no matter of the pipe diameter. the fenderwell exit is nice because it makes routing dual exhaust a snap. However, it makes putting in a crossover or an X pipe nearly impossible, and X pipes and H pipes are proven to make more power than "true duals." Additionally, on our chassis trucks, routing the exhaust past the starter, transmission cooler lines, and transmission is difficult, with that crossmember in the way.
there's no clear "winner" as far as pro's and con's for each type.
I agree with hasteranger. L and L sucks when it comes to pleasing the customer. I ordered a set of shorty headers may 10th and they just now are being shipped.... at least that is what they told me. I also ordered a power steering bracket for the 460 swap and it looked good, but when I put it on the pulley didn't line up with the crank pulley so I had to extend it over 1" with some spacers turned down on a lathe. Oh and the bracket also angled the p/s pump at an angle to the crank pulley. I really hope the headers are good, otherwise I will have absolutely nothing good to say about L and L. Just my 2 cents.
My L&L 3/4 length headers are awesome. Best fitting set of headers I have ever bought. I've been running them for 5 years now and there isn't a spec of rust on them, and the truck sits a lot. They are worth every penny. I even had them swap the flanges so they would fit the EFI heads. When I ordered mine, I called them and talked to them, the guy was really helpful and cool on the phone.
dang thats good news I was starting to sweat bullets because l&l was in my future plans on out board headers when i get there, any body done the 4 bolt power steering in highboys notch, crossover, sterring column.I was wondering the clearence issues with running the outboard L&L thanks
