the 351/400 m shares the bell housing pattern with the 460
351c has the same pattern as the 302/351 wheezer
so to swap to a wheezer you would have to change the tranny/bell housing also
to go to a 460 you would have to find a set of junk yard motor mounts or jeffs bronco graveyard(r.i.p.) has them new for 107(i think i can't get thier new online catalog to come up) to swap 460 for400 and bolt to the tranny you have in your truck
sorry kind of half read your post
i would rather have a 400 built
I would have rather built a 400 also, and I might do so anyway. I already have a cam and 9-1 ertel pistons. I know where I can get a 460 out of a lincon but I realy dont want the extra weight. I shortened my truck about 39 inches. Don't want it too tippy up front with the extra weight. The 302 will be a get by why I build the 400 and the C-6 tran. I have a line on a 400 ford out of a 72 LTD wagon it sound to run real well. I will go in tomorrow and check the compression and leak down. Have to bore out .020 over for my ertel pistons. Cost=$400. $1 per CI. Not bad. Thanx everyone.
P.S. I did see a M with a C on my block on one of the corners, I will look tomorrow. I have heard of some blocks cracking.

Are cracked heads a common problem on the late 70's trucks? I know where I could pick up a 78 F-150 Custom, SuperCab, Longbed 4x4 (400 I believe, too) real cheap, but it also has cracked heads. How expensive would a new or junk yard set of heads be? I think it would be a nice project/off road/show truck, but I also would want it to be affordable, too. What else would be involved? I would love to have a truck to play around in, ao I wouldn't tear up my '95 F-250.
I don't know how common 351m/400 cracking is but I do know it happens time to time, normaly from the MC blocks I've heard. I think it's the later years too. People on this forum know, so sit tight and somebody will clear it up for you, and correct me. The life in these engines is amazing. I had compression in only three cylinders. The best was barely 50psi. Both my heads, and my block where cracked, no rings to speak of, and she started like a new car, warm or cold. Got 6mpg, but she was a dog that wouldn't die.
the common cracks where on m blocks from michigan (M over C inside another C) mid 76 and earlier so 78 should be fine (key word is should) but you have to start putting her right emmisions/early no lead gas then timing gear has to go (my 78 had the factory(stamped with date) chain when i bought it 6 mos ago) fuel is easy throw a properally set up for your engine 4bbl on and compression slightly harder with out tearing it down
if the heads or gasket(like me) go ahead and put 302C aussie heads on less cutting(block/head) and the deck is thicker and still bigger valves 325 plus shipping from dsc motorsports in cali used of course got mine on ebay(299+ups 67.25 WAY crosscoutry) from them but availb on their website if i got to lift them out i aint putting low comp heads back on but any way
Use the cracked heads to cut apart so you can see how the water passages go. It will give you a better idea of where to grind and how much. Get some good hacksaw blades tho...
