so I'm almost done with the body work on my 1978 f-150 and I think that I might put 16 or 17 inch wheels on my truck when I get the body work done I think that I will go with the 17 inch wheels. So I need to know what size of 17 inch tires will fit on my truck without having to modify my truck and still be able to tow stuff wit it? thanks in advance.

Is it 2 or 4wd? Are you looking for the tallest that will fit? Gear ratio for towing? More info needed.
my truck is 2wd, and yes I would like to know what the tallest 17" tire is that will fit on the truck is and still have enough sidewall to handle towing like a camp trailer or atv trailer. I'm just trying to decide what size of tires and wheels to put on the truck when I get all the body work done and the truck bed painted. thanks in advance.

You are probably going to want to stick with something around a 30-31" tall tire with a half ton 2wd. 275/60R-17 will be 30" tall, a 265/65R-17 will be 30.56" tall, and a 255/70R-17 will be 31" tall. With a truck I would try to get the highest aspect ratio to give you more sidewall. This should be a start, I have not used 17" wheels on these, someone who has will probably chime in. Wheel offset is going to make a big difference on whether these wider tires rub or not. Your speedo will be off between 3 and 6MPH between the shortest and tallest tires of this group @ indicated 65MPH. Gearing for towing will be affected as well.
thanks for the help, 15 and 16" tires are probably going to get hard to find. with all the new trucks coming out with 17 and 18 inch wheels and tires from the factory. so I just thought that I would go with either 16 or 17 inch wheels and tires. also do you think that the truck would look good with 17" wheels and tires on it?
I have 33x12.50 mud tires on the back of my 2wd 75 super cab. Looks pretty cool, not sure what the fronts are. They are actually getting ready to be spares for the 4x4, once I get the yard graveled and all the parts trucks line up along the back fence.

What!?! Do you know how many cars and trucks are out there run 15 inch wheels? Millions! These tires are not going away.
Some of the 'specialty' tires may not come in 15 inch size but by this I mean low profile tires but that isn't what you are looking for so you should be safe.
I'm running 265/75R-16's with 8" wide rims on my 76 F250 2wd. They are about 31.5" tall. They fill the wheel wells very well and have plenty of sidewall to soften the ride somewhat. Previous wheels were 16.5" split rims. I debated on 17" but wanted more sidewall.
yeah that's the same problem I'm having now. I can't decide which size tire to go with. cause I need a new set of wheels also, cause my chrome ones are all rusty and look awful.
