Off Topic... But Still Ford

I know this is off topic, but need your input.... Helping my Dad (73)save money on repairs on his 90 lincoln town car, cant afford payment on newer car,We pulled his engine out to do a complete reseal.. car has 120k on it leaking oil like crazy.. also put in new timing chain while we had it apart.. left Heads/Gaskets alone.. we got the engine back in everything hooked up/fixed his a/c.. Fired the ole girl up and runs/idle's great no leaks.. now the issue.. driving the car its like its pulling a boat no power, really have to get into throttle to move it.. I Checked timing vac lines etc all good.. 2 nights ago I drove it around 3 miles pulled back into the garage poped hood and holy cow the right side manifold cherry red.. I'm leaning towards plugged CAT.. no issue's out of left side.. what are you Guy's thoughts.. Its a 5.0

Did the SES light come on? Seems like with the exhaust restriction, you'd see a bad O2 sensor reading on that side. I'm thinking your right about the Cat. Can you break the connection right before the Cat and run it?

I had an old ford truck that ran like that all of a sudden. I looked under it and found a big dent in the muffler. Took it off and it ran fine. You might be right about the Cat.

You"re timing is retarded. Had the same issue on my Bronco II, put in different engine, ended up not timing it correctly and that was exactly my problems. Read the manual on how to time it, there was a "sensor" we had to pull before we timed it.

Are you referring to the SPOUT (spark out) connector? It must be disconnected before setting the intial timing. http://www.broncoholics.com/support/..._dsc007891.jpg

Yep, that would be it. Neither dad or I knew about it. We tried timing it and that was the result we had, no power and glowing exhaust manifolds. I thought it was the exhaust as well, pulled cat and cleaned it out, made no difference. Finally looked into proper timing trying to troubleshoot things. Pulled the SPOUT connector that we didn't previously, timed it same exact way and the thing ran like a champ!

I always assume people know about these things when they work on them. That's why it's not the first thing that comes to mind when diagnosing problems. It did seem odd the a Cat would have plugged from just an engine removal. Stranger things have happened.

That's exactly what's wrong. Been there, done that too!

i'm going to unbolt the exhaust at the manifolds and see how it runs.. yeah I know about the plug to check timing I have to go borrow one to make sure timing is dead on correct.. we marked dist before pulling it out and made 100% sure that all marks lined up on the install..
