i replaced my clutch master cylinder and hooked everything up bled the system then went to get in it and pushed the pedal i hear a pop and i get out and look and the master cylinder rod poped off the pedal and broke the retaining clip what could be causing this
Is it doing it every time? There is alot of force to push in the clutch, was the bushing and rod on all the way and "snapped" in place. If its not on all the way, it would just pop off like you say.
It could be that the stud on the pedal that the bushing goes on is worn and wont hold the bushing in place, this happened to mine and i replaced it with a bolt and a much better real bushing.
It could be worn at 70,000 miles. It has more to do with the bushing wearing out and letting the metal of the push rod eat into the metal of the stud.
Look under the dash with a flash light and see if the side of the stud toward the front of the truck is worn. If it is you will have to take off the nut that holds the stud and the arm to the pedal assembly. Make sure you mark the position in relation to the splines, otherwise it will be hard to line up. From this point you can either replace the arm and stud, or drill out the stud and replace it with a bolt, make sure you can get a bushing that fits tightly over the bolt, and tightly into the push rod, otherwise youll have the same issue. I got a bushing at Home Depot, i forget the size but i have extras in my truck, ill look and post the size in a little while.
I hate the plastic ones. From the factory it had a metal one, If you can pull the plastic one and use the metal one from the stock master cylinder that would be best. Anyways, i know the bushing should hold the push rod on so tightly that you will likely break it trying to get it off. I wondering if the bushing that came with the plastic rod is a little different and not holding as tightly as it should.
well with no luck in the junkyards i went to try and nurse my truck off the driveway ,and now it wont go into gear when i hold the rod on the stud and depress the pedal. there is still fluid in the master cylinder i bled it properly and a week ago it worked. now it doesnt am at a loss as to what to do any ideas?
This is a common problem and there are literally hundreds of threads.
I can't really address your specific problem because my M/C has a metal pushrod, but if the 'eye' is ovaled or deformed you are best off replacing the M/C and plating the firewall while you have it out.
