Hello, I new to FTE and new to the 7.3L PSD. I recently bought a '99 F350 Dually PSD with 416,000 miles on it, run greats. The issues I have are the fuse for the fuel heater/IDM blows and once in a while when going to start it, the "wait to start" light won't come on and it won't start. Also, I was wondering when this happens, will it still start on liquid wrench?(so I've heard) Anyone have these issues? I have noticed a lot a valueable formation on this site. Thanks to all.
If you look at the back side of your fuel filter bowl, you will see an electrical connector there. Unplug it. You're problem is most likely a shorted fuel bowl heater. If you remove the fuel filter you can see the small filiment heater in the bottom of the bowl. Leaving the heater unplugged will not hurt anything. Several guys from way up North have left theirs unplugged for years.
Unplugging the connector should keep you from blowing fuse #30 and keep you running.
Welcome to FTE. Be sure and scroll further down the main forum listing and stop in at the 99 - 03 7.3 diesel section. Lot's more good info down there that may come in handy in the near future.
When that fuse blows, the Wait To Start (WTS) light won't come on and the truck won't start. Make sure the fuse is good, unplug the heater, and you should be good to go. If you do some reading down in the 7.3 diesel section, you'll notice one of the questions that's usually asked in the "no start" threads is, "Does your WTS light come on?" The short in the fuel bowl heater is that common.
I unplugged the fuel heater as suggested, so far I have not had fuse #30 blow again. But my WTS light sometimes won't come on and the truck won't start...it can do it warm or cold. Any ideas where to look???

Sounds like we're making progress without costing you any money, which is always a good thing. Next time the WTS light does not come on, verify something for me. Leave the key on and listen for the electric fuel pump. Does it hum for 20 seconds then shut itself off, or is it silent? The fuel pump is mounted on the driver frame rail under the seat. It sounds like you've got a circuit not getting power and the fuel pump is one indicator that might give us a clue.
If the fuel pump is quite, leave the key on and try unplugging and plugging back in the PCM relay. Also try wiggling the big wiring harness with red striped tape on it that is over the driver side valve cover under the air intake tube. If either one of these actions cause the fuel pump to suddenly come on, then try and start the truck without turning the key back off first.
UPDATE: This morning when to start truck...No WTS light....Give it a 1 sec shot of Liquid Wrench and it fired right off. Glow plug relay?? The truck is stock, no chip or tuner.
