It has been done, but not recomended. Why spend all that time to get to it and not spend the couple hunderd more to do the job right the first time. Take the heads off have them checked for cracks and flatness. Install new hg and not worry about it again.
Lots of posts on doing studs without lifting cab and installing one at a time . When I get enough money saved that's how I will do mine lot of guys will tell you not to do it this way but I don't see any reason to destroy a good seal and gasket. Good luck John
That will explain the gin on my face....and my wife thinks it's gas. Have the head sent out and checked. It's worth the money. I can sleep at night knowing that the heads on my truck are flat and without cracks. ARPs and a new HG. It'll give you that warm fuzzy feeling inside.
Wondering if anyone out there has heard of anyone changing the headbolts on the 6.0 with out doing a "head job". changing them one at a time i guess?
If you are 100% sure that you have zero problems then it might not be a bad idea to just do them one at a time. Would I do it that way, no, but the truck isn't mine.
Now if you are doing heads because they need to be done or you are unsure if you heads are still good, then it would behoove you to do it all the first time, otherwise, you will eventually have to tear back into it to fix it yet again. Contrary to popular belief, the mere fact of having ARPs in the truck doesn't mean that you can't have head issues again unless the installation was done correctly the first time. This is coming from someone that had to do the job twice.
yea i would never do a half head job if i had problems. i have no issues with the truck at all. i just want to feel better about putting a tuner on it.im not a hp hungry guy. i just have a 10,000lb camper and would like some added juice when pulling and stopping.

Tex, Were you able to do the ARP head studs without lifting the cab? Did you use Ford head gaskets or Black Onyx?
Five minutes using an air chisel with a hammer bit makes short work of getting clearance on the drivers side. Passenger side you need to pull the one side of the hvac box. Cheezit is the expert but my nephew is getting pretty good. Amazing what you can do with a few rubber bands and sections of rubber tubing.
I am not Tex, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn once. We had the heads off my 04 truck 3 times. We had the engine out once. We never raised the cab. I have used both head gasket types with equal success. When my nephew does a job now, he does remove the front end. He can get it out of his way in an hour and it does make it much easier.

We had access to a lift, so we used it. Some might think it's extra effort and time that doesn't need to be spend. But it made it a whole lot easier doing the other stuff that I was doing as well.

I used Ford gaskets. To my knowledge the only difference between Ford's and Black Onyx is the amount of sealant that is on them. If I recall correctly, Ford's just has it around the edges and around the cylinders, whereis with the Onyx it is all over. Other then that, I think they are identical.
I have heard good things about the Onyx though, Ford's are still good enough unless you are wanting to push some major HP.

Ok now that was funny. Thanks for the insite. Would you use one head gasket over the other?
