cleaning starter insides..
#4
I have rebuilt hundreds of these while I was working at a rebuild shop.
The parts are bigger than the delcos.
The only Caveat I would say is that on the Stationary gear there is usually a washer that the armature will ride on. I say usually because it always seemed to me like an engineer trial, type thing because there is three different sizes and sometimes not a washer at all.
After a HORRIBLE batch we had to start tearing them down one at a time.
Buy a pick set....the "L" pick will make installing the brushes alot easier, just file down the sharp tip.....TRUST ME ON THAT. those things HURT!!!!!!
unless it is dragging and you think there is crud around the armatue, you can take the through-bolts out, hold it upside down, and the armature will stay on the brushes to clean the gears and bendix.
