I think that the flush is better, but if it isn't a heated flush machine, it might as well be "drop the pan" time. The system has a "thermostat" in it and it doesn't open until 160 *F or so. This makes it impossible to drain the torque converter without the heated machine.
which one would be better to do flush or drop the pan and change it
It's not really necessary to drop the pan, removing the drain plug will allow 8+ quarts of fluid to drain. Just make sure you have the proper fluid to install which is Mercon SP or Mercon LV. They can be mixed with no ill effects.

Good point. You just get a little more fluid out when you do and when you remove the internal screen (which can be re-used if it is in good shape). It also is not a bad idea IMO to look at the internal of the pan to see if you have any foreign material.

If the internal filter is not in good shape the transmission is toast and needs to be rebuilt. That's the ONLY way the internal filter can get enough junk in it that it has to be replaced.

I understand that, but apparently not all dealerships do. My dealership replaced my filter at 60k when I decided I was too busy to drop the pan myself .....
what's the fluid capacity? i thought it was like 12 quarts or so. So to me, only partially flushing through drain pan, instead of heated flush, makes no sense. you've now contaminated 8 fresh quarts with the remaining old 4 quarts that you never got out and that needed to be flushed aswell (assuming my capacity estimate is correct).

Ive never viewed this as it being a filter at all. Its more just a screen if im worng please correct me.
