I should add that when I went to the Vacaville DMV office I was prepared with everything including proof of insurance and the previous existing Calif license plates--although they hadn't been active for 10 years--i suppose i could have kept them and just said they were lost? Anyway i didn't .
But after an hour or so I walked out with "tags" and a completed registration. Totally done. I'm not "certain" that they gave me the monthly sticker and the extra 2 metal plates etc--but maybe they did. They may have mailed me some of that stuff later/not positive--it was a while ago.
But the point is I was driving the truck the same day. Good to go.
So it is doable and no significant waiting if everything falls into place.
Its a been a couple years and I'm still using them.

you get a month paper (the ones you see in the back windows) until the sacramento dmv clears the plate, then they send you the new registration, stickers and metal tabs. it costs $10 (maybe $15 now) extra a year for "special plates". like said before you just need the '56 commercial plates..no sticker. i have 4 (soon to be 5) vehicles with yom plates, my '47 car has '47 plates (no tab/sticker), the '54 panel has '51 commercial plates with a '54 tab, the '60 el camino has '56 commercial plates with a '60 sticker and the '36 has '36 plates. you need 2 plates (except for 1945 and 1946).
also make sure they fill out ALL the paperwork (lower half of the application) that hung me up an extra month last time. the boxes need to be checked off in their section. it asks for plate size, plate material, numbers, then they have to look in the system to make sure the plate numbers aren't being used and need to check the boxes they looked in (ie. commercial, motorcycle, car, trailer....) it will make sense when you see the form.

Oh that's right. Now I remember one of the red and white or? pieces of paper that I pasted in the rear window. Now I remember. The rest must have all be mailed later. Thanks
This is a very useful explanation. Thanks. The only thing I think, is that for 1956 in particular, there is no colored "year" sticker, as the plate is already stamped "56". So what'd I'd really need is 1956 plates with no sticker indicating year.
Gustave
Oh that's right Dr G
I wasn't paying attention. I guess with a "56" there's no need for the "year" sticker uh? I didn't even think of that.
By the way I bought my plates from Dave Hindman--the above link--in Vacaville. I had some 55? plates that I came by from a garage sale and I knew they'd be in demand so I traded the 55's on the better condition 56 plates that I could use on my 58. etc
Dave Hindman is a cool old guy and I recommend him. Hope he's still around. I really liked visiting with him at his shop/house in Vacaville.

1951 plates with a 1955 tag, correct? No specific 1955 plate made.
Guys, once you get your new old plates approved, you will want to get them reconditioned. Don't do it before going to DMV though. One of my buddys was turned down because he had "altered" the plates by having them reconditioned. Once you have your new registration and everything is finaled with DMV, you can have the plates restored or you can do like I did. I actually ordered new plates from a supplier on the internet. They were exact duplicates of the old yellow and black CA plates and they cost $75 each. http://www.licenseplates.tv/ Good luck, Jag

if this happens ^^^^ go to another dmv. i've painted mine and they let them through, i've also had a dmv tell me mine had to be restored BEFORE they'll pass them (which i went to another dmv and they let them go through). i bought my commercial '51 plate from dave in unrestored condition (the ones the dmv wanted me to restore first) and he gives you a 90 day that they're clear. by the way '47 and '51 plates are WAAAAY more valuable then the '56, so if you have some you should be able to trade up.
Has anyone put YOM plates on a 2ton or larger truck? Can they be reg. as a historic plate? I'm afraid the DMV would charge just like it was a reg commercial plate ... weight fees ect. = big bucks.
I am goign to try and register my truck for the first time in 20 years. It ahs to be inspected--the woman said they are simply going to check if the vehicle is sound.
But I only have one plate--the rear. Do you think it'll pass DMV? It doesn't sound like they'll be checking it.....but I don't know.
Well I don't really know. I "suppose" they're meant to check that along with the other "soundness" issues etc. But sometimes one can get "lucky" .
Of course if you plan to operate it on any kind of regular basis--its likely to be a problem - some day, etc. I mean around where i live the cops look for that kinda stuff-- in general i mean, and would likely stop someone and give them a ticket.
But you can try to pass the inspection with only one plate i suppose. I don't think the dmv inspection would do anything but help you get a complete set of plates. Of course they'd be the current colors etc. If keeping the color you have is important to you, you wouldn't want to get them in hurry about your plates. They might somehow "hurry" you into some new color plates. I don't know but if you say "you can't find it" --the other plate--things could happen fast. Think about protecting your options before you get the DMV to far involved. I don't know what might happen if they "decide" you need new plates.
Or you can order a set-I guess-from the earlier mentioned on line site that will make you some plates that will be copies of your black with yellow letters. I don't know anything about the place or anything. So is that legal?--I don't know but if you get some I wouldn't bring it up at the DMV. I don't imagine they'll ask. So that's all up to you of course.
And if the plates colors aren't important you can just get a new set from the state. That's another option. But if you sentimentally want to keep the one black/yellow plate-you'll have to tell them they're both lost. Do you understand? In general I think they're required to ask you where the old plates or plate is, and its up to you to decide what to answer. They want you to surrender the plate if you have it. Understand?
Just making some suggestions/guessing/don't really know whats right for you.
David, I tried the link and it works. Not sure why it's not working for you.
Also, I forgot to mention that I heard of a guy who took his old black and yellow plates into DMV and the counter lady wanted to keep them and issue him new plates. He had to get loud to get his plates back. Good luck, Jag
