As a sort of follow-up - It's well established that some branches of California's DMV are more familiar than others with the YOM program, and are, therefore, somewhat more "user-friendly". If you're in the South Bay,it may be worth your while to use the Los Gatos location. It was a piece of cake, though it is usually crowded.Still, better for me than using the Santa Cruz location. No personal experience with them, just a healthy suspicion about Santa Cruz weirdness.Heck, they are my own people......

Thought I would add my own experience to the thread. I live in the San Fernando Valley and made an appointment at the Simi Valley DMV office. I'd been there once before and they seemed pretty good.
When I presented my appointment paper to the guy at the front counter, he read "Vehicle Registration", then looked at the manilla folder I had on the counter, spotted the edge of the two "56" plates and said "You're hear for YOM". I said yes. Then he asked me a seried of questions: do you have your registration? yes. proof of insurance? yes. YOM form filled out? yes. current plates? yes. OK, here's your number.
When my number was called, I asked the lady that would help me if she was familiar with YOM. She said she had heard of it but had not done it herself. Luckily, the lady next to us had done it, and helped guide her through it. At one point she also called the manager to ask a question, and the manager was very familiar with YOM.
The whole thing took about 10 minutes. I did surrender my current plates, as the are personalized and I have no use for them. Let someone else use them if they want (56 EFFY)
So my personal experience for anyone in the area wanting to do this is that Simi Valley seems a pretty good office to use. Your mileage may vary.
Do not forget to bring a check to the DMV, they do not take credit cards. The woman next to me had waited for two hours in line, then could not finish what she wanted to do because she had no check. She was so angry!

Since you already had personalized plates, you could have had them replicated in the 56 plates and put them on your truck. Not sure if you wanted the normal sequenced plates for your truck, however.
That's what I would have done. 56 Effy is a good plate!! Jag
DMV website doesn't show it as available. Must have been already taken after it was relinquished or a few years might need to pass before it's available and clear again.

Naw. The 56 plates I got are used, as in vintage. They have that old look I really like (a little rust and fade). I was not so interested in "new-looking" 56 plates.
56 EFFY should open up soon for anyone who wants it.
Do you guys/gals think that certain DMV's would be willing to let my truck pass with only one plate?
I already said it once in this thread: I want to keep my black and yellow "63" plate, but I only have one. Obviously if they stick to regulations that won't do.
But do you think there is a chance a DMV might let it pass?

You may want to have a duplicate made for the front, some DMVs are a lot more tolerant and you may just get by with it given that you have one that is valid right now.

Shouldn't be a problem if you have the title with the plate number on it. They don't need to see the truck, nor the plates, if you're simply re-registering the vehicle into your name.
They will only let you put a vintage plate on the truck if it's a YOM plate of th ecorrect year-unless you were the original issueee of the 63 plate, they will take it and issue you new plates.
On the 3 vehicles I now have CA YOM plates on they never checked to see if I had both (they seemed to be overwhelmed with getting them properly into the computer) - but that doesn't mean they won't
You can have a duplicate plate made, there are several companies that do this, in plastic and aluminum. Once on the vehicle, there's no visual way to tell.
See the Services Offered section in Hemmings Motor News for a list of companies that do this.

That's a good point. But they do inspect the plates at the Ca DMV when you take them in to have them assigned to your vehicle. If th eperson you get isn't familiar withthe plates they usually call a supervisor.
BUT, after they get accepted by Sacremento, you can mount th eplastic or metal duplicates - which isn't a bad idea, because with the expense involved of getting the real ones, they tend to get stolen frequently.

So all my effort to get 51 plates with 54 tag YOM will get ripped off ??? Guess I will weld them on my truck !!!!!

i used tamper resistant bolts.......it will at least slow them down. i run rear plates only so if it gets stolen i have 1 left. now that place that repos plates can sell to california so you can have duplicates made if you lose one..the plate number is still registered to you.
