Base coat-clear coat paints seem to be very popular. We have a local PPG dealer that pushes the Omni acrylic urethane system instead. I guess it can be cleared if desired but not necessary. Does anyone have experience with this stuff? How does it compare in durability, ease of application, cost etc. with the base/clear? Any positives-negatives?
One of my parts suppliers used to use Omni Brand, they do make a base/clear system as Well.. You can clear over single Stage, Maaco does. For durability Single stage has made some definate advances latley.. however it still will not hold up as long as a base/clear system. With single Stage there is no protection for the color pigment so it fades. With base clear, you have the clear over top for UV protection.
The quality cost range for the PPG paint line is as follows:
PPG-Omni-Global.
PPG has better matches and is therefore more $. If you are looking at doing completes then I would consider Omni. If doing panel repairs that require color matching then I would use PPG. However lots depends on the vehicle. When refinishing Porsches I use only Glasuirit products due to the superior color matches. It helps to know what line of paint is used on the vehicle and then use that product.
