So this is a few months away, but I wanted to get some ideas on the color scheme to start planing the budget for this job. I've done some research about which paint to use.
I started out wanting to use the DupliColor paint shop system as it is very easy to use and the quality seems to be there...at least it looks good in photo. After learning that laquers don't hold up to any kind of everyday use, that pushed the duplicolor system out.
I was next interested in Acyrlic Ename (AE) vs. Acyrlic Urethane (AU) (bc/cc). I've read on another forum on this site and ford used AE on most vehicles up to fairly recently, it's safe to say that our trucks were shot with AE and shooting my truck with the same kind of paint technology cant be bad. It's a little more money, but I think I can handle that.
Well, then I read a bit more. The Urethane (being the newest paint technology) is better because, not only does it resist chipping and can handle the elements better, but the best clearcoat to use is a AU clear. And if you want the paint to last any reasonable amount of time, the clear is a very important part of this whole mess. SO, I've decided to go with Acrylic Urethane. It's more money, but I know I will be keeping my truck for...pretty much ever. Probably will be buried in it (hopefully many, many, many years from now.)
My question to the community is this: and the reason of starting this thread here in particular...
What color scheme would look good on our trucks?
Here is a picture of my truck in 2001:
I do not have the camper shell anymore...miss that soooo much. And the original bed is gone after a hit and run from a guy running from the police crunched my bed (only damage to the truck, luckily, and she runs straight and great!!)
I like the original colors and style. I don't think it looks bad at all...but I don't really have a creative side of me that would/might come up with something better.
So...after being long winded...what are some suggestions??
EDIT: I miss type up above. Acrylic Urethane is different by BC/CC (Base Coat / Clear Coat). Though built on similar systems... bc/cc is the way to go for a lasting paint job but at more cost.
that's a nice lookin' truck, I just started gettin' into the body work on my 84 f150 yesterday. I've removed all chrome going down the sides being as it was in rough shape anyway. once I get the few holes patched and the few dents patched, I plan on using an olive green from the top of the side marker light's crease down, and black from there up. and transition the two with a 3/4 inch pinstripe in ivory. then shoot it all with a satin clearcoat to hopefully help hide some of the imperfections that I'm sure my bodywork will contain. anyway, I'm glad to see this thread, because I'd like to hear another opinion on my idea.
I'm interested in a repaint as well, I really like some of the color schemes ford had in the 80's...others, not so much lol. I'm thinking maybe bright canyon red for my truck (it's an 84, so it'd be legit) but my truck has a gray interior...so I'm also thinking (not trying to hijack the thread, sorry dude)...back when I was a young'un mom had an 85 F250 xlt (can't remember if it was a lariat or not), anyway I remember it was two tone black and silver and I seem to remember some red in there, but not for sure...maybe pin stripes. Would anyone happen to have any pics of this paint scheme or something like it? I can't find any pics of our old truck, either. Just kinda wondering.
Btw, what colors are you leaning towards repainting your truck?
I always thought a tu-tone of Old Caterpillar Yellow and Gloss black would look amazing... Here's a quick chop I did a while ago of a '73-79 truck to give you an idea:
Of course, the classic Wimbledon white and Vermilion red tu-tone looks amazing as well.
Dorsai, I really liked the blue over white as well. As of right now the bed is a grey over black because I had to get the bed replaced. I am really leaning toward keeping the colors and having them custom mixed to match the factory colors.
The black over yellow would get noticed. haha! Red over the wimbledon white would be a nice tu-tone look...if I were into red.
Decisions, decisions...
I will record my progress throughout the job and post a complete thread on the job start to finish.
Im plannin a metallic green like Bullitt green only a little lighter with the white to-tone. Iv also thought the blue with white was nice, like yours only reversed.
Keep the white and blue, but make it shine. I LOVE white/blue two tone trucks, more so the white trucks with the blue stripe. If I were you, unless you want to keep the truck original, I would go with the more pure Oxford White. It's the same white that's used on all the new XL trucks since the late 80's, and all the white Post90's Ford trucks for that matter. It's a really clean white, and I think it accentuates the blue much more.
Somebody on here owns this truck I think. It's exactly what i'm talking about. If I hadn't grown fond of the brown/beige on my truck, this was one of my choices for my truck.
Just an FYI, but the Urethane paint system is much more likely to make you seriously sick, if you don't have the proper facilities/PPE. A downdraft paint booth or fresh air suit respirator is usually recommended.
Here's what I did with mine...I eliminated the lower two-tone line for a more modern look. Another subtle but nice change was going with 04-06 badging.

that's exactly how i'd like to paint mine just different colors, but I thought it gives it a more classic than modern look, like a throwback to the 60's f100.
That's true....does look like the earlier ones too. To be honest, my goal was to match my Softail....thought it would look good if ever towed the bike and the bike and truck matched.
Im a big fan of the Blue on White or Blue on Silver. Keep it true Ford colors!
You could always go crazy like I did and use spray on bed liner on the whole truck and then set it off with some Mustang Grabber Blue. First time I took it down the road it turned quite a few head!

I am looking into renting a paint booth at a local body shop. I've read how nasty the stuff can be if not well repsected.
