I just picked up a fresh 410 shortblock, .030, 1U crank, new pistons, etc. Also rebuilt set of C7 heads. I'm looking for some guidance for cam selection. I want this for my 75 F100 for towing a travel trailer, not looking to burn the tires off the truck. . I also will need a balancer and flywheel but read where the balancer's are the same, only need the correct flywheel, is this correct? And finally, what type of torque gains will I have over the stock 390? Thanks for any input.
Its the same block as a 360 and a 390 so its not going to weigh any different, just have more cubes. What little I have read is good, supposed to be a very torquey engine, should do what you want to do with it just fine.
Balancers are the same btween the 410/428 and the rest 360/390/427.
You will need the correct flywheel/ flexplate for a 410 or 428 if the engine was NOT balanced internally at the machine shop.
What bolt pattern are the C7 heads drilled for? Most are drilled for 14 bolt manifolds. A few for 16 bolt manifolds. A lot of 1967 390 and 410 engines had C6 heads (C6AE-J, C6AE-U, C6AE-R (big R and small R).
The others received the C7AE-A, which is nothing special and usually drilled for the GT manifolds.
Tater what part of the country are you in. I have an RV type cam that I just yanked out of my truck. The lifters are marked and everything else. If you wanted it I would just send it to ya for shipping cost.
I assume the heads are the standard, they are C7AE-A heads, all I know is they are dated 6J22 (have yet to receive shipment). I know there are better performing FE heads out there but these were totally rebuilt, magnafluxed, resurfaced with new valves, springs, 3 angle valve job, hardened seats, etc. so I'm hoping they will perform as new. Michael, I live in northwestern Michigan, 49420. What type of cam do you have? Thanks, Terry
Hmmm... I would ask what bolt pattern the heads are drilled for as you want an 8 bolt head for truck manifolds or headers.
Otherwise, each head will need to be drilled and tapped for 4 new bolt holes per head. Also have to be extra carefull with the bottom 2 bolt holes that you do not hit water. Not that it isn't a big deal if you do, but better if you don't
Mileage towing a travel trailer sucks no matter what, but I do have a 2 speed rear with a 30% gear reduction for highway cruising. At 55-60 with 4.10 gear I'll tack around 2800, when in overdrive it drops to 2000 and I get pretty good mileage. I don't use the overdrive when towing.
The 410 was a 2 year only (1966-67) offering in Mercury cars. It's one of the first "stroker" motors, as it's a 390 with a 428 crank dropped in. Same bore as the 390, but the longer stroke of the 428. Similarly, the 360 FE is basically a 352 crank in a 390 block. I've got a '66 Mercury wagon with one of these, and it's pretty powerful (330 @ 4600 RPM "old" factory HP rating, and 444 ft.lbs of torque @ 2800 rpm). Figure about 15-20 more HP and 40-50 lbs of torque compared to a 390.
You shouldn't have any issues dropping this into your truck, provided you've got a FE bellhousing tranny & 360/390 motor mounts. It's an externally balanced motor, so you'll need the correct flexplate (assuming it doesn't have one already) Stock heads had the 8 hole exhaust, so shoudn't have any issues there either.
There's a ton of aftermarket parts now available for FE's, especially from Edelbrock. You can drop about 40 pounds by swapping a Performer manifold in place of the factory iron monster, and roughly another 100 by going to aluminum heads. You'll be very happy with this motor--especially if you take a few steps to lighten it and wake it up a bit.
The shortblock was rebuilt, .030 over, with 381P sealed power pistons. If I understand it right, the 410 CR is 10.0:1 as compared to the 390 with the same piston being 8.2:1? Been looking at posts for cam selection and kind of worried about the higher CR. Looks like the Crane 343901 is a better match than the 343971 which Crane recommended.
Call the various cam manufacturers and get their opinions, they are more qualified to answer your questions than 95% of us on the board. They will ask you a bunch of question about the motor, your truck and what you plan on doing with it, and set you up with something you will be happy with. Also do a google search for FE specific websites, and checkout the FE forum here, you might find people who have the same thing and can give you "been there and done that advice."
