I have been told that there is a new improved front pump seal for the E4OD tranny. Does anyone have the Ford part number for this item? Want to be assured that I don't get one of the original seals when I purchase one.
Sorry, I don't have the part numbers but the dealer carries the updated seal.
The old seal is grey.......the new seal is black........ made of viton rubber.
Be sure to check the bushing in the front pump. This is a common reason for the seal failure. Also check the converter where the seal rides for grooves. If the seal failed because it got hard then it could wear grooves in the converter snout which will make the new seal fail.
Jim, thanks for the information. I wanted to have some idea of the appearance of the new seal. I may also put a billet torque converter in at the same time. My 7.3 only has 75K miles on it but I carry a very heavy Arctic Fox 1140 pickup camper so an upgraded TC may be a good investment. Thought I had a serious problem with over heating tranny fluid but it turned out to be a bad sensor.
Again thanks for the input.

I'm in this exact same boat with our Excursion. Ford man said they only show one seal, it's the grey one ($8). Napa has the Viton ($13). I bought them both, but I'm leaning toward the Viton.
MagKarl, I tried my local Ford dealer and they only had the old seal( the grey one). My parts house was familiar with the seal but only had the grey one also. Do you have the NAPA part number for the black viton seal?
TIA,
The Napa part number for the Viton version is ATP 16455. I test fit both versions onto the neck of the TC hub, and decided the Ford version felt better. Hard to say, I just thought the Ford seal felt more compliant. It was a tough decision, and I struggled to find conclusive information to help make it.
