I am looking to purchase a 04 f150 5.4 with 55k miles. I am concerned about the problems with the spark plugs. Is there any thing that can be done to avoid the problem? Is there a known cause?

What problem are you referring to? If it's the "stuck in head" problem, then as soon as you get it home, change the plugs. Leaving the plugs in for 100K miles is a guaranteed way of making sure the ground shell sticks.

I have found that if you remove the plugs while the engine is hot increases your chances of pulling threads. I always wait 'till the engine cools down to remove plugs. Then I use neverseize when I put them back in.
I think you are making a mistake in dumping your Ford at this time. You have just paid to fix what seems to be the biggest problem with Fords of that age group and will be giving the benefit to the new owner. Keep in mind that there are no perfect trucks out there, they all have some kind of issues. Swallow your anger and see if the truck gives you good service from now on. Give it some time, you may be pleasently surprised.
