dose annyone know annything about the "axel hub bearing assembly" ie is it common for them to go out? dose it matter which one you get to replace the bad one? why do they cost so dang much?has any one changed one and if so is there a thread for that?any info or help would be great. thanks
You can go here to get instructions on how to remove to relube, or in your case to replace. Easy enough to do, and gives you a good time to look at your 4x4 esof hubs and brakes as well. Welcome to guzzle's 4x4 Needle Bearing Maintenance Web Page
The site is set up for the 7.3 psd, but the drive train is pretty much similar across the super platform. You can find other maint on his site on the main page.
The bearing assembly you can get new oem at ford, order from parts guy Ed, still oem at a GOOD price(a sponsor here) or go the ebay route. While ebay will not be excellent quality, I went that route and now have close to a year on them and no problems. Here is a link to another thread with similar questions. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ront-hubs.html

I wouldn't say they commonly go out but they do tend to be a "wear" item and OEM service life seems to vary widely. Many folks will get the inexpensive ones from E-bay others pick them up at Napa or O'Reilly's etc. The cost doesn't seem out of line for what it is. There are plenty of threads about replacing the hub assembly I would recommend grabbing a cold drink while you read plenty of opinions on the which place to buy from (E-Bay or local store).

I think it is the whole unit, but I am not sure.my whole hub unit & tire mooves around,&my truck shakes like hell when I drive it down the road.
Sounds to me like you need new wheel bearings. (unit bearings) The internal needle bearings only actually spin when the hubs and/ or t-case are locked/engaged.
Unfortunatley the unit bearings were not designed to be greased. Grease can be forced into the ABS hole but it not designed to be lubricated in that way and you don't know just how much grease gets where it needs to be.(Though it looks llike the grease gets in ok) So they are basically expensive throwaways, "maint free" bearings.
well I changed the hub bearing assembly lastnight.it was not to bad at all everything went quite well thanks to all the good info. you people ROCK thank all of you.!!!

I also did mine for the first time earlier this year. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Got my hub assembly from Advanced Auto, and now I am thinking of changing the other side as a precaution.....

I believe that the needle bearings are active whenever the hubs are NOT locked... Live spindle. So, the needle bearings become more important than the old style / fixed spindle... ?
