So it does not act up on stock tunes? I know, these cases are rare but you have to eliminate that because it does happen.

I haven't eliminated it entirely, but I'm open to the possibility. After returning it to stock last week, I tried to get it to crap out, but no luck. I'm going to return to stock again tomorrow and work at it again.

However, I'm struggling to devise a theory as to how the performance tunes could be causing this problem. I've been running the 80HP econo mode since May '07 and the truck runs great in the winter, so................

Just go back to stock. Those are older tunes. Make sure it is the truck and not the tunes/Edge. It is an electronic device. Need I say more?

OK, here we go.

I left the 80hp econo tune but removed the Edge from the truck Wednesday night. That seemed to work until today. My nemesis returned.

When I pulled over and shut the engine down, I quick booted the laptop, plugged in AE and loaded up some parameters to observe. Just for ****s and giggles, I included Engine Coolant Temperature. I was shocked to see it reading 277 degrees 1 minute after shutting off the truck. That seems to be a mite high.

I let it cool down until the ECT showed 185 degrees and started it back up. Still ran like crap. I got about 2 miles down the road, ECT displayed 293 degrees, so I pulled over again.

This time I got out and immediately popped the hood. Fuel was squirting out of my fuel bowl under the lid. I've noticed a fuel smell in the truck the last couples of days, but that filter was replaced a month ago and no issues until the last few. I don't think this is the cause of my problems, but still.

Let the truck sit until ECT read 185 again, started it up again, and it still ran like crap. Managed to exit the freeway and pull off with the ECT reading 307 degrees. Yikes.
Shut if off and watched the ECT display. It came down steadily until it reached about 175 degrees, then it dropped like a rock to about 110, slowed down until it got to 90, dropped again, slowed again, etc. It was 90 degrees out and the ECT continued dropping til it showed 3.2 degrees, which happens to be the lower limit in AE. It then went to 512 degrees, the upper limit in AE and continued to drop from there. Somewhere around 490 degrees displayed, I said fugg it and started the truck. It ran OKish, not as bad as before, but not exactly right.

Within 10 miles everything cleared up and it ran fine the rest of the way home.

I would ignore ECT readings on these trucks. From what I understand, that sensor is only used by the manual tranny trucks anyway. My ECT numbers don't seem accurate most of the time even with my manual. I'd watch EOT if your worried about engine temps.

ECT doesn't read properly at all on the autos. Mine's been up in the 400's while running and it doesn't change the way the engine runs one bit.

I was reading this thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...hen-hot-2.html

Although my truck doesn't instantly die, some of the symptoms sound similar. Could this be a bad IPR?

Here is some data from one of my poor running episodes:

After the engine started running like crap, I floored it - WOT - and this is what I recorded before letting up. Based on what I'm reading elsewhere, I'm not sure these readings are appropriate for this condition.

I did.

Ahem. After struggling with this most of the summer, I finally concluded it had to be a fuel issue, and decided to drop the tank to check out the pickup unit. I had the tank off a couple years ago to do the in-tank mod, so I couldn't figure out why this would now be an issue.

When I dropped the tank, I discovered my fuel line was pinched between the tank and the frame rail. Nice. Moved it, no problems since.

Since my problem only manifested itself when the weather was warm (above 60 or so), I think maybe the line was OK in cold/cool weather, but expansion of the tank in said weather caused the pinch to worsen. Whatever. In any case, it's gone now.

On to the next issue with the money pit.
