I am just wondering if there is a reason one would be better than the ohter. I have an E99 F250 and I am having the tranny rebuilt for the 2nd time. Nothing really done to it 205k on it.
I have been told that I should get the Juice but that new touch screen evolution cts looks nice.
Who told you to get the Edge? The Edge stuff always seems to result in harsh shifts and not much power for as much money as you have to spend. There are much better power adders out there for your truck.
I am just wanting a nice looking gauge station so I can keep an eye on the damn tranny temp. after two rebuilds I have had enough of that. I use my truck as a work truck. I install replacement windows and tow a 14 foot enclosed trailer 8' wide 8' tall box.
I am mainly looking for longevity and better MPG if that is possible.
Just thought that Evolution CTS looked nice and had a lot of features and monitoring that could be seen at one time. I think like 8 parameters at once.
Alright Joe, let's start with the basics. First you have to accept the fact that many rebuilt tranny's are just junk, so you're not starting in a great situation. If you want to extend the life of the tranny, a tranny temp gauge is a great idea. It's not something that can be monitored without adding a temperature probe into the existing test port. Either the Edge or a standard tranny temp guage can read this for you. Below 200 deg F is what you tend to want to shoot for.
The stock tranny cooler is pitiful. You will want to either upgrade to a 6.0 tranny cooler, or install an large inline auxillary tranny cooler to help with the temps. Also a shift kit like the transgo tugger will firm up your shifts and help extend the life of the tranny. If you don't like the idea of replacing springs in the valve bodies, Clay at Riffraff diesel can sell you a modified valve body that you simply bolt on in place of your stock one to help firm up the shifts.
Lastly, I'd ignore the MPG part of the equation. Sure the right chip/tuner and upgrade combo might net you better MPG's, but it likely won't be enough for you to realize any savings until tens of thousands of miles. If additional power is what you're after, you can do much better than the edge. First step is gauges, then upgrade the intake and exhaust, do the tranny mods, stick a real chip in there, and it will be like a completely different truck.
14' is a small trailer. Unless you've got a ton of weight in there, drag is your biggest problem. The other advantage a chip would offer is better lock up of your torque converter. My wife's truck will actually down shift with the torque converter still locked if she lets her foot of the go pedal to slow down. (I've got a handshaker so my truck down shifts whenever I move the stick)
Wow thank you much for all the info. I need to try to ingest it now.
So to be clear the edge CTS would not be bad for the gauge side of my needs.
One of my buddies just told me about the poor cooler (little to late) but now I know I need to look into that probably right after the gauges.
Then some exhaust and intake.
Does this sound like the right order.
I just need to recoup my funds after this 2k I just dropped on a tranny rebuild. I am interested in the shift kit. Where would I look for that at?
The edge should work fine as a guage, but you will need to buy a sending unit and install it in the transmission before you can read any tranny temps. You're money would probably be better spent on a real gauge. If you plan on further upgrades, get the full set of pyro, boost, and tranny temp gauges from someone like Clay at Riffraffdiesel.com He sells auxiliary tranny coolers too.
Little over $100, and well worth the money. I paid about the same from Oregon Performance Transmission, but those idiots were of no help. My kit came missing one piece and they argued with me about who's fault it was. I called transgo and they overnighted the part right away. OPT is a bunch of idiots if they want to argue about a part that the manufacturer is willing to overnight at no cost because it was missing.
If you go to Transgo's website, there's a video that shows part of how to install the shift kit. Here's a thread with some pictures of how another member here did it. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...l-article.html
After doing this to my wife's truck, I think it's well worth the money. There are several of us here who have done this (no one has needed to do any modifications to the soleniod pack yet so I'd skip that part).
Most of us just unbolt one valve body at a time and do the modifications there so we don't have to mess with the main plate and all those check *****. Of course, once you drop the pan, you'll want to go ahead and flush the fluid, and probably change the filter too. Here's a link from Mark (former Ford auto engineer) on how to do the flush yourself Changing ATF Fluid in a E4OD and 4R100 transmission .: Articles
Stick around for a while and we'll have you feeling like a master mechanic.
very nice. I really appreciate all the info. I think that shift kit will probably be my next purchase. not sure I will have to replace the filter though. Since I havent even picked up the truck from the tranny shop yet. It better be brand new. Not to mention that I just had it and the fluid changed about two weeks before it lost OD.
Thanks again for the links
I don't think he needs to add a sender, Chris. My Scan Gauge reads the trans temp from the OBD port, just like the Edge would.
Also, if you already have the rebuilt trans, find out what the builder put in it. A lot of builders put in shift kits as part of their "standard" procedure.
I'm honestly not a fan of the Edge stuff, but if you're mind's made up, then go for it. I *have* heard that folks have had trans issues with it though, like Chris mentioned. Buyer beware!
He's talking about Brian's Truck Shop in Lead Hill, AR. He builds one of the best if not THE best 4r100s on the planet. Since you have a rebuild, you really need to find out what's in yours now for a shift kit before you spend any $$$. Chances are you have a TransGo in it already (same kit Brian uses). Custom tuning really is the way to go- it blows away any off-the-shelf stuff out there. I'm partial to Tony's tuning, but there are many out there that do a hell of a job...

Then still have money left over for some of those other mods, like a good tuner with 3 programs.
If you run the insist on the Edge, start saving for another tanny. Everyone I talk to says the same thing about Edge. They are fine for the manual trannies but are hard on the autos.
I have ran the edge on e-99 and to be totally honest it was the biggest waste of time and money i've ever spent! And guess what? I toasted a tranny about two thousand miiles after i installed it. Even the gauges are junk imho.
