Both are do-able, just a question of money really. Gear sets or lockers run about as much as a used axle at a junk yard. I'm all about recycling and saving $$$ so i'd go the junkyard route.
its a pain to set up the carrier, and its expensive to pay a shop to do it. For that reason, I think a lot of people just swap the whole axle when they find one with the gears they want in it.
On the Ford 9" it's a simple bolt in. All you need to do is change the center section (pumpkin, pig, differential, third member, etc.) for one that has limited slip. Just check to see if you have 28 or 31 spline axles.
