engine placement?
engine placement?
MY 1948 f1 has 1980 Camaro ifs, a 351w engine, and a c6 transmission.
Just finished engine rebuild . But, encountered problems with engine and transmission clearance. The mounts are about 2 inches tall and welded to the main front cross member with just enough space to put a nut on the stock rubber portion of the 351w motor mount.
temporary have stock exhaust manifold
Have only about 1 inch of clearence at the sides of the manifold. NO CLEARANCE at the front and rear of the transmission, can not raise the engine for clearance because
need advice and/or pictures of how others with a Camaro ifs have installed a 351w or a 302.

Sorry not to high jack your thread but is there something that makes these chevy IFS's better than ford IFS's? Ive seen quite a few threads on here and a couple other sites where people are using the chove-it-or-leave-it-lay (chevrolet)
parts.

Sounds like the engine mounts are wrong. Are they the stock ones from the Camaro front end? If so they are for a Chevy engine. Place the engine and tranny where you want it, then weld in the mounts. Be sure the angle of the engine is level at the carb mount. Hope that helps. Tardster, I'm with you. I have a mustang II based front end-very happy with it. Mine's a 289, C4 too!!!!
thanks Zoot
My engine mounts are made by me and probably wrong. That is why I hoped to get some pictures of other 302 or 351w's insalled in a camero ifs.

Z1121jack, check out my gallery. I have a 78 Camaro front clip with a 351W and a C6 Trans. I have no clearance issues so far. I have about 3/4 inch between left head and firewall. I can take some pics tomorrow of what you need. This was already under the truck when I bought it or I would have gone with a mustang II. After I completed my drive train I started hanging the sheet metal and saw that the wheels didn't fit the fenders. So I took everything back apart and cut 2 inches out of my frame. Looks good now. The motor mounts are homemade and work well.

Here is the pic of my motor mount on the camaro frontend on my 53. All it is is a piece of 3 inch angle about 3 5/8 inch long welded to a piece of 1/2 inch plate. Then it has a piece of 1/2 inch pipe welded in the V of the angle for the bolt to go through. Its not fancy but it works for me and its not going anywhere. It was already there when I bought the truck but I did have to move them when I cut 2 inches out of the frame. The best way to do that is bolt them to the motor mounts and set the motor where you need it and then tack them to the cross member. I then removed the motor and welded them in place. If I remember correctly they are 17 5/8 inch center of bolt hole to center of bolt hole. But its easier to set the motor and just tack them.

Hope this helps. Just drop me a PM if you need more info.
