Engine/Transmission Swap 1960 F-100

I am in the process of putting a 352 w/C-6 in a 1960 F-100.

I have notched the frame crossmember about 1" which allows for the C-6 Pan clearance however, I am curious about driveshaft angle.

I am using the original transmission mount for the 3-Speed Overdrive transmission and a later model C-6 Transmission Mount. Perfect fit, however, I am not sure if there is a minimum/maximum angle.

I am using a aftermarket Engine Mount for the 352 and had to manufacture a 1" block under the mount to get enough clearance for the C-6 after notching the crossmember.

If anyone can tell me the safe angle for the driveshaft to rear end would be sincerely appreciated.

I have the latitude at this point to to raise or lower the transmission mount support.

Disenvet.
The crossmember you notched, was it the one where the old rear motor mounts bolted up right under the firewall? I just cut the rivets on mine and lost the whole thing. It really doesn't serve much function and just gets in the way. If you do this, just be careful of the brake lines and fuel line. It can cause a little fire if you are using a torch.....er ah,..... how do I know?????
I used an aftermarket transmission mount from Dennis Carpenter.
NOW, for your question. To get the proper angle on your truck, with the truck sitting level, put a small carpenters level on your carb mount on the manifold (without the carb). Adjust the back of the transmission until the bubble is centered and the intake reads level. Then nail down the transmission mount. The actual driveshaft angle is not a big concern. What you have to make sure of is when the rear end goes up and down, the transmission YOKE has enough length to slip in and out of the rear of the transmission. I don't remember the exact amount of play, but I think it is about 3/4" in and out. Check your driveshaft maker in your area to make sure. He will also tell you how to PROPERLY measure your driveshaft length.
Pay a little money and get this one right.

Yes that is the crossmember however, I have found a few stress fractures in the frame in various places. Taking it out is similar to the problem of using the Isuzu Gas Tank. I don't want to create more fractures so I am leaving the crossmembers in place.

As far as the transmission you are partially correct except I have found out more information. The angle of the transmission must be in parallel with the Rear End. In other words, if there is a down tilt of 4 Degrees from the transmission shaft to the rear, then there must be a 4 Degree tilt up from the differential. The distance from the rear end forward and the Transmission rearward must be parallel. This eliminates vibration and eliminates premature wear of the universals because of offsetting load.

There must not be a direct shot from transmission to the Rear Differential.

LAST EDITED ON 22-Nov-00 AT 05:37 AM (EST) by webmaster (admin)[p]I had a 64 F100 with a 292/3sp and put a 390 with a C6 and cut the cross member you speak of out and made my own mounts front and rear. I had so much torque that after a while I had several frame cracks. Leave the cros member in or cut it at the rivets and reposition it.
