I am not sure, but on my truck there is a separate radiator for the transmission, and it is not common to the radiator. I think an old southern boy might say, BRO, you been had!
Trans line comes from the trans, goes into the radiator, out of the radiator, into the aux trans cooler, out of the aux trans cooler, and back to the trans. This is the setup I have. 2008 sd cc 4wd psd.
Honest injun, your transmission fluid DOES NOT go into the RADIATOR. It goest into a separate radiator to cool the ATF. It is not common fluid to the ENGINE radiator. MY POINT, you said you paid to flush your radiator and they gave you a new coolant engine radiator. You should not have been charged for the FLUID in the engine radiator.
I believe my truck has seven separate radiators under the hood.
What I said I paid for was my 30k trans flush and fill. The radiator and coolant was on Ford. My trans fluid does go thru my radiator though. Honest injun.
The chemicals in your antifreeze coolant would destroy your transmission. Take a real close look and you will see it goes thru a radiator but not the engine radiator. ATF fluid of any kind will not mix with Anti freeze of any kind. CANNOT BE what you say.
Remember how the engine is cooled. The coolant circulates around and thru the engine and back to the radiator. The transmission ATF circulates thru it's separate cooler and back to the transmission.
The fluid from the transmission goes to a separate cooler, then to the radiator. The radiator has coils inside the tank where the automatic transmission fluid passes. It doesn't mix with the coolant unless something is broken. This is done for a few reasons.
If the automatic is running hot, the coils in the radiator tank will pass some heat to the radiator coolant. If the automatic is running cool, the fluid will actually take some heat away from the radiator coolant.
Also, transmission fluid works better when it is heated some. Running it through coils in the tank guarantee it will not be too cold for optimum transmission function.
Hey REDFORD, when you comin home? Seems you been in Afghanistan for about 18 months. I am betting you come home and buy a new 2011 SD! Comment? Good luck,
Rich
No one ever said that the atf and coolant mix. They both go thru the radiator but in separate areas. Heres what I got under the hood. 1. Radiator 2. Ac condenser 3. CAC 4. Trans cooler 5. Turbo cooler 6. PS cooler. I think that's it. I have been working on commercial aircraft, Large trucks, Autos, etc. for decades, so I didn't just fall off the turnip truck. I know systems. This truck is new to me so I'm still getting to know it. Great website.

Rudiak, you said above: "I took it in and had the 30k trans flush/fill done (214.66) and they changed the radiator under warranty. They said it's a new and improved radiator. I have read of people doing muliple radiator changes. We will see. Thanks everybody for the info."
With what you say in paragraph 1. above. Why would you pay $214.66 in paragraph 2 above.
I was just commenting on info available. Not trying to ruffle your feahers, you are the OP.
I meant that the $214.16 was what they charged for just the trans flush and fill with lv atf. No feathers ruffled here. Just a misunderstanding. I appreciate you're input. Have a great day.
