Hey, I'm not to far away if you want to get together and I can take a look at your truck. We can check out all the small things before you start throwing cash at it. These motors are pretty intimidating if you have never had one before, but when you have one and then check out one of the newer trucks, you will see how lucky you are.

86 was the last year that the water seperator was always on the fire wall.
88 was the first year that it was always integrated into the fuel filter.

On the 87 model year, I have noticed about a 50/50 split in where the water seperator was located.

As for your problem, the first thing I would do is get a bottle of Diesel Kleen, remove the fuel filter and drain it.
Then refill the filter with Diesel Kleen and reinstall it.

Now start the engine and let it run for 15 seconds, then turn it off.
Now let it set for several hours.

Dump a good dose of the Diesel Kleen in the fuel tank.

After it sets for several hours, start it up and drive it hard for an hour or so.

You should notice it runs and idles better after you drive it for a while.

The Diesel Kleen cleans out deposits in the IP and lubricates the fuel system.
That little trick has fixed many ailing motors over the years.

If it is dieing after it has run awhile and smoothed out it is not your return lines.
You have a fuel problem or an air problem before the lift pump.
