When I purchased my 73 F100, the horn did not work. I have replaced the steering wheel with an old one out of a Mustang. I purchased a cheap horn switch - the type that mounts on the dash or steering column- and would like to hook it up so I have something to honk.
I have checked the horns by jumping them straigt to the battery. Can anyone tell me how to wire up the horns to this switch without burning up my truck? I'm not sure if I need a relay or not.
The horns are grounded thru their mounts, their power wire goes to a relay, this relay gets power from a horn fuse, it is also closed by the horn button making a switch and providing the relay with a ground.
Many times the original horn stops working because the ground path to the relay is interupted at the rag joint on the steering column. A quick fix is to run a wire across the rag joint, thus providing a ground.
Hope this helps.
