So I finally got a hose and oil filled 100 psi guage to check my fuel pressure. As I suspected it is low. It is about 7 psi at idle, 20 psi at about 2000 rpm and very steady. My question is replace the fuel pump or place the bb in to jack up the pressure. Looking for opinions here on what helped others with this problem.
X2 on what Jim said. If your fuel pressure is an issue replace the pump and make sure your fuel bowl and FPR are clean as possible and flowing well. Or go to an electric pump system.
replace the pump and do the BB, if you need to buy a little time before you came pull the truck down to work on it go ahead and do the BB as it will help you out, but just realize that your pump is on its last legs and needs to be replaced, and depending how much fun you want to have, I second the idea of looking at an electric fuel system, it is much simpler than the OEM set up
Thanks guys, no problem getting a new pump and installing it. I am in the middle of brake lines, wheel cylinders, shoes and drums tonight. Is this the best way to go ?
Thanks

NEW CARTER FUEL PUMP & FUEL SYSTEM O-RING KIT for FORD PSD 1994-1997 7.3L Includes a NEW Carter Fuel Pump & NAS Automotive O-Ring Kit NOK100-01A.
You will be removing the fuel filter housing when changing the fuel pump so it is a good time to replace the hoses and o-rings.
O-RING FAILURE SYMPTOMS: Fuel Puddles in Engine Valley Fuel Dripping Under Bell Housing Un-burned Fuel Odors in Cab CAUSES: The 1994 thru 1997 Ford 7.3L Powerstrokes did not have fuel system o-rings that were compatible with Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel or even low concentrations of Bio-Diesel. The actual life of the o-rings varies greatly and many may not have started to leak yet. These new kits have Brown colored o-rings made of Viton which is resistant to ULSD and Bio Diesel. We purchase all of our Viton o-rings in a Brown color so that we can quickly know that we are shipping the correct ones. This is for your added protection. This kit now includes an additional o-ring and a bolt kit. The bolts are small stainless steel Allen heads to replace the factory Phillips head machine screws on the side of the filter housing. This kit also includes 4 fuel injection rated hoses SAE J30R9 to replace the "blue" Ford ones. The blue ones are usually heavily cracked, split and will leak. Don't use a cheaper rated hose as it will not last.
You may find a web site that talks about the "3rd o-ring" for the drain valve shaft. This o-ring is NOT exposed to pressurized fuel and cannot leak unless:
1. The valve is open and the engine is running (not advisable).
2. One of the other 2 drain valve o-rings has failed.
Anytime plastic is exposed to fuel and heat it becomes brittle and taking apart the drain valve to get at the shaft o-ring can be risky. Ford did not include this o-ring in their kit for these reasons.
As of 12-14-09 we will include the shaft o-ring in all of our kits at NO extra charge.
You can decide if you want risk taking the drain valve apart and possibly damaging the valve itself. If you have purchased an o-ring kit from us in the past and want a free drain valve shaft o-ring send bernie an email, be sure to include your customer number or order number !!

I simply replaced the pump itself with one from oreilys for $75 witha limited lifetime warranty, and called it good, but I had already replaced the blue fule lines from the filter housing a few months earlier, and all my o-rings were good.
So I got the pump and it was lying on the kitchen counter when my son all of a sudden figures out it is way cheeper to drive the power stroke than his cavalier. He leaves for binghamton ny to take his m-cats test to get into medical school.
He made it 150 miles down I-80 and it quites. short story here REPLACE your pump if it is low on pressure.
It is $3.50 loaded mile for flat bad.
I changed the pump when I got home, fires right up. Now have 60 psi.
My question is now when you start it it lopes really bad for a few seconds. Any suggestions ? not everytime, just sometimes. I really want to run this truck to outer banks n.c. next week but this lope scares me a little.
Yesterday I cruised to Carlisle meet and the truck run like a champ, better than the day I purchased it. Yup before the new pump I only had 7 psi fuel pressure so it should run great. The kit I purchased had all hew hoses and o rings so they were installed. My question is now when you start it it lopes really bad for a few seconds. Any suggestions ? not everytime, just sometimes. The run to Carlisle is 500 miles =or- and it still does it, I would think the air should be worked out.
Next problem, When we stopped at the rest stop I thought I was going to be calling a flat bed again. When trying to start it, it cranked really fast not wanting to start. I hit the glow plugs one more time and it was the same, acts like it is running but not getting enough fuel to make rpm's at idle. I just touched the throttle a bit and it fired right up.
Any ideas, and help would be greatly appricated, and thanks in advance.
