fuel pressure specs

so tested the fuel pressure today and my readings came up as the following..
at idle it was a constant 35 psi. removing the vacuum line was 40 psi. so back to an idle and 35 psi and playing with the throttle it would jump up to about 38psi and when i let off it would drop to 30 psi and then rise back up 35. shut the truck off and it held for awhile it never dropped but it slowly rose like 2 psi. i know it is within specs but does that variation sound about right?

Yes that sounds about right factoring in variations between parts and the +/- tolerance of a fuel gauge. Does the truck perform as you would expect or does it have an issue you're trying to figure out?

^^^^Agreed.

That's pretty close to my '92, 302.

35 is too high at idle. Sounds like you vacuum is too low, maybe a vacuum leak.
It should be 30-33psi at idle.

Gauge sounds like it is right on as 40psi is the right reading for no vacuum or the vacuum hose removed from the FPR.

Fuel pressure at idle:

Fuel pressure with vacuum line off engine running or with 2-6 jumped with the engine off:

Yeah at low rpms and low speeds it will stall or bog WAY down then jump back. For example waiting for a stop sign at a busy intersection when I move up.

Ok, then you have something else going on. Need to pull codes. Then post them here.

Have you tried removing the IAC valve and gently cleaning the plunger inside with some rubbing alcohol, brake cleaner, or electronic cleaner?

As always, pull codes first and then let us know.

You need to pull the codes as stated above.
That said it sounds like your EGR valve is stuck open and that would cause the high fuel pressure at idle.

The code I can't shake is 179. I thought maybe it was pressure related. It does seem to run rich but pulling a plug yesterday it looked burnt as if it was running real lean

How are you checking for codes? My '92, 302, 4wd, AOD, is 2-digit.

I know Ford started the 3-digit transition around '92, but usually 'V8's were 2-digit until last quarter of '92.

But looking at 179, it says it's " HEGO/O2 sensor unable to switch, Rich at part throttle".

With an obd1 scan tool. So with code 179 is that the o2 sensor bad? Idk if it even does anything with the exhaust set up I have and the lack of thermatic air system

Define "lack of thermatic air system". Are all the components completely removed and all spots where it connected to the exhaust plugged, or is is just diabled and hoses are hanging there sorta kinda plugged or worse just wide open?

There can not be any fresh air getting into the exhaust upstream of the O2 sensor, it must be sealed up air tight.

By lack of I mean the previous owner hacked the crap out of it. Right at the pump and installed headers so it's not routing to the exhaust. The valve is still back there. I'll double check to see if the back ports are plugged or not when I get home
