Gas Mileage

Question? I just bought a 00 Expy EB and we drove from St Louis to FLA over Christmas. I only got 13.6 MPG. Is this normal? Also, the side mirrors shake at speed over 60, is this normal?

Thanks for any help

We get better than that, but depends on what particular Expy you have and what has been done to it. Never heard or seen the mirrors shake or vibrate...But if you search this thread for "MPG" you might find alot of helpful information..

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Jan-02 AT 05:07 PM (EST)]I get 14.2-14.4 all around whether I'm on a long run or combo city and hwy.Don't have a city MPG only number.
I do alot of 70 MPH so the 3.73 rear gear eats somes gas.
You probably have a tow package with the bigger gears.

No problem with mirrors.
Check tire balancing.

I have a 5.4 with the 3.55 gears. I usually get 28 gals in the tank and average about 14.0-14.5 mpg (400-425 miles to a tank). Two tips, make sure you are getting as much fuel in the tank as you can. The pumps usually shut off arount 20 gals or so (when low fuel light is on). YOU STILL HAVE 8 GALS TO GO!!! There is an issue witht the vent on the exys and they do not fill all the way up.

Tip 2 USE THE CRUISE CONTROL! It really does help!

As for the mirrors, I am eager to see what comes of that. I have a 2001 and my mirrors shake as well. They have done so since day one. I have checked my tires and everything else I can think of. I have not said anything to my dealership as that is the least of my worries. It seems as though auto makers are going in the direction of mirrors that are sub par. My wife had a 99 Honda Accord EX v-6 and those mirrors were horriable! At 45 they were all over the place. She traded it in on a 2002 Toyota and they do the same thing. Kinda odd.

I do have the tow package, not to sure what gears though. As for the mirrors, tires are balanced and the truck is solid. They just vibrate like the wind is moving them around. It does have those rain deflectors on the windows, I wonder if that is disrupting the air flow some how.

Gas Mileage

Greetings,

I have a 2000 Expidetion and average 15 MPG just running around. I get (believe it or not) 20 MPG on the highway. Made a couple of trips to Florida and got 20.2. Just set cruise on the speed limit and enjoy the ride.

I get around 10 in city and 14.5 on highway trips. Mine is a '00 5.4L 4x4, 3.31 gears with 33" tires. Sad part is I'm only turning around 2,000 RPM at 90 and still get this bad mileage...I guess because I'm going 90. My passenger side mirror shakes and is most noticeable at idle.

Axle Codes:
19-3.55 non-limited slip
17-3.31 non-limited slip
H9-3.55 limited slip
H7-3.31 limited slip
H6-3.73 limited slip

That really doesn't sound like bad milage. I just got back from a 1500+ mile christmas tour and got, as I have since day one, 14.5 to 15 MPG. Mine is a 99 2WD w/ 3.73 gears and a heavy footed driver. I have had over 15 full size trucks, vans & SUVs with V-8s over the yaers and log over 75,000 miles a year (work & personal) and I have never got over 15 MPG in any of these. I have a friend who got the Ford / Mazda Tribute, says he gets 20 MPG, I say 5 MPG is little to pay for the full size truck, Especially with gas around here going for under 90 cents a gallon!

As for the mirrors. . . mine are tight, don't vibrate and work great

Gas Mileage

I forget what the Initial stats for milege were when i bought my 01 Xped, but with a couple of modifications..im seeing on avarage 17-18 city...and 22.5 on the highway. I saw a great increase in HP and Gas Mileage after I added the Cat Back System, and the Dual Flowmaster Exhaust. I initially did it because i wanted the truck to sound Mean, i was really surprised when i started seeing that kind of mileage. Also, Aftermarket Cold AIr Intakes, and Ram Air Intakes are supposed to help with gas mileage. I have K&N's FIPK Cold Air Intake on order now, After a few weeks of driving with it, ill post my findings.

On my trip home with my 99 XLT, I did in the high 16's for MPG. Went from Philly to Sanford Maine - 430+ miles before filling up. I have fulltime A4WD so I can't switch mine off like some of you folk. 3.55 gears.
